Making Better (small) Sprites

Greetings!

I am trying to make 2D sprites out of my 3D models. It seems to work well, as long as I am making large sprites, but most of my software are set up to use small sprites, say characters that are around 50 pixels tall. I have found that attempting to make renders that are that small lose so much detail that they look worse than sprites made by hand.

Does anyone have any advice for making renders that look good at around 100 pixels or so? I figure I can get away with that, but I'm still losing detail.

    Have you tried simply resizing larger renders? The larger the initial render, the more detailed.
