Indexing in Windows

Do you use indexing on your Windows drives?  I can't see any reason to use indexing on my Daz drive and was wondering what others think.  I tried to turn it off on a drive and I think it might take a decade for it to accomplish that and bailed.  My computer is doing "maintenance" so much of the time I can barely use it and a lot of that is indexing.  I am about to add another drive for art and to prepare for a new computer that I will be able to purchase sooner than later and am considering turning off indexing when I attach it.  TYIA

I have disabled indexing for all the drives and on all the computers I use. On my latest work computer I let it be on for a while, but in addition to making the computer feel sluggish, it was also making it difficult to find anything with the search.

Indexing was maybe useful (on barely adequate computers) when it was first introduced, but during the past 20+ years, the advances in computer hardware have made it a nuisance

What PerttiA said. I disabled indexing years ago and don't miss it. I definitely noticed a performance increase.

Thank you.  Does anyone know the trick to turning it off after it's been on?  I tried but it seemed like it almost had to un-index the drives to stop which looked like it might take forever.  I though about trying one large directory leg at a time.  TYIA

That's annoying, but as far as I remember, you can close the window by just clicking at the "X" in the upper right corner

  • I turned off Windows indexing and use Everything instead. It's super fast, free, and doesn't make my computer a sluggard.
