Can you replace one figure with another?

This seems like something I remember doing in the past, but maybe it was waaaay back when I used Poser...is there a way to replace an existing character in a scene with one that you have previously saved, including bringing over any hair or clothing attached to it? I know you can hold Ctrl and apply a DAZ character to an existing one (although it takes forever for some reason), but I have not been able to do the same with anythng I've saved myself. Do you have to save it in a particular format or is it just not possible? Thanks for any help.

If you're loading a scene-subset of the other character into an existing scene, then not directly BUT you can do that and then copy and paste from the old figure to the new, getting the pose and position. Then delete the old character.

Only other way is to save your other character as a 'character preset' and then apply it in the same way as you described above (but then you don't get hair and clothes loading in).

    Edit for confusion

Have you tried saving your unwanted character (the one being replaced) as a pose preset, then merge new outfitted character (edit: that you previously saved as scene subset) into scene, or alt drag to location, and then apply the pose preset?

Edit: Do not do this unless the wanted (replacement) character was saved as a scene subset.

Thanks ArtAngel. I don't think you even need to drag to location with that method. If fact saving/applying as a pose preset should place the character in the previous position, and I think, also scale it to the previous size. I could be wrong and thinking about props but I'm pretty sure it does.

If you don't want to go the preset route (so many buttons to click...) you can try...

    1) Make you first scene and save it.
    2) When saving it, you will be asked if you want to "Include Background Color, Include Backdrop Image, Include Render Settings" and "Compress File."  Select as desired.
    3) Create your new scene.
    4) Import your old scene by right clicking on the .duf file in Content Library Pane.
    5) Select the "Merge into Scene" option from the drop down.  This will merge in the options you checked from the other save file (including render settings, so it will override your current file).

Without knowing exactly what you want to do in order to replace the figures, this is the only thing I can think of to help.  Best of luck!

So the answer appears to be "no".   ;)

Thank you for all the replies. I'm a bit surprised that we still can't do this after all these years. I do all the usual, like saving poses, characters, properties, etc, but just thought quick replacements might be handy for planning out complicated scenes. Ah well.

    Thanks again.

That will work too Write Idea, but involves quite a few more steps than just saving a pose preset and applying it to the new figure.

I tested it and I was half right. The chair is off 0,0 and the new figure did relocate to the same cordinates as the origial figure with the same pose. As the figues were neither at 100% scale to start with, it's hard to say if the scaling was preserved. I had to upscale the imported figure. If they were both at 100% to start with it might have.

Edit - I do remember a "Replace Current Figure" option, but I think that was in Poser.

If have saved your character as a character preset, and everything they are wearing (hair, clothing etc) as a wearable preset, then all you need to do is select the character to be replaced, delete all their attachments, then apply your character preset and wearable.

This does of course assume the character to be replaced is the same base figure as your own (eg G8F). The pose of the replaced figure will be retained, but may need to be tweaked if the new morph is significantly different.

The advantage of this solution is there is no need to load another base figure, which can take ages if you have a lot of morphs/characters installed for that base figure.

Brilliant Havos! That method will only save the embedded clothing morphs of the first figure, unlike loading the original clothes from the library, but in most cases that shouldn't matter that much.

It's been a couple of years since I this and you were right no need for alt drag @fred9803. All I ever did took only two steps, three if you count deleting the unwanted character. I threw a dress and some hair on a robot and saved it as a scene subset closed Daz. Most people would have characters already saved.

    1. I saved the child character pose (sitting on tree) as a preset.
    2. I merged the taller robot into the scene.
    3. Deleted unwanted character
    4. Applied pose preset.

It took less than two minutes. The reason I use a scene subset versus a scene is because scenes include lights and cameras and could rest reset render settings.

Edit: These robot and girl characters were G3s. So I took a preposed G8 (not in A pose), and applied the G3 pose-preset to it. The results only need minor tweaking and this method works regardless of generation. I found saving character presets did not save the hair or parented props. You get back a bald character, so, I prefer scene subsets.

I think the OP wanted a way (script?) to automatically unparent/unfit the attachments of one character and to reparent/refit them to figure two along with the pose and figure position. Well maybe in DS5 LOL.

I'm not so sure there would be enough situations where one would want to do this to justify developing a script like that. It would be handy in a few situations but I can't think of many. You'd be better off saving the pose preset, zeroing the figure and applying the new character preset to the first one, and then reapply the pose preset.

I think I've done that in the past Havos, thank you for reminding me. That's probably the most reliable method anyway. Thanks again.

UPDATE: I think I found a solution. Save your character as a Wearable and check the Shaping and Material tabs when saving. Now when you apply the Wearable to an existing character, it will apply the morphs and texture of your saved one, along with any clothing, hair, etc.
