Does Studio have an issue with depth maps now?

I cannot seem to generate a decent looking depth map using Canvases now, and I wondered if this is a new issue to Studio or if I'm forgetting something. When I work on the EXRs in Photoshop, they always have abnormally strong grain on the outer edges of the object or figure, and they're also inverted regardless of the background or lighting that I'm using. Do you need to use scene lights or a background, or even a camera with DOF for that matter? I'm really not sure what's wrong and it's getting frustrating because I get exactly the same results no matter what I try.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    I spotted this with 4.20 I think...

If you take say prop or scene and render it with no background the edge of the object is noisey or jaggy and you have to run the depth map for a very long time which is crazy as it used to be if you did one a single iteration  or two would do it.

My workaround was to create a flat primitive behind my object or scene scalled up to fill the background and distance it so it becomes the new "white" far distance the old depth map would have done and render that even so it still takes a few interations to remove the noise.

if your scene has DOF on you sould do the same in the depth map.

Ah, so it isn't just me. Thank you for confirming, I will try making one with a ton of iterations and see if the grain eventually goes away. Do you also happen to know the difference between Depth and Distance canvases? I almost always get identical results, but I assume there's some difference that perhaps my scenes just don't happen to trigger. Thanks again.

    Darn its explaining it...

Imagine your standing on a road and at the end of a road is a wall with a pidgeon on it

Depth is the distance between your feet along the road surface to the foor of the wall under the pidgeon

Distance is a line from you to the pidgeon

Does that make sense? :) so basicaly although they are different in practice you might not notice but I always use depth.

That is actually a good explanation, thank you.  :)
