I usually use GIMP for post work but it is limited.
In DAZ store there are lots of good products for post work but they can't be used with GIMP.
Can someone confirm if Photoshop Elements can open .PSD .ABR type of files ? I wan't to use Deviney's products but need to be sure before investing.

Which version of PSE do you have? Mine is fairly old (PSE 2018) and I can't use any brushes marked as "Adobe Photoshop CC 2021 brushes(.ABR)" on the store page, but all the ones that say they are compatible with Photoshop CS6 or "Photoshop Brushes for both CC and earlier versions of Photoshop .(ABR)" work fine in my version - in fact most of those work in my PSE9 which is installed on one of my PC's.
If GIMP is giving you trouble, check out the free program Krita, might have better luck with it.
I don't have PSE yet but I assume if I buy it the version would be 2022.
I wonder if .ABR files are compatible, as per what you're saying it is more than likely they can't be used in Photoshop Elements.
Agreed.Rons Brushes work in Krita.
His brushes also work in Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer which is a one time payment. You won't be able to use styles, though.
I didn't know there were "versions" of brushes files. Sort of reminds me of stylus generations which is one of my pet peeves.
So in answer to OP: yes, Photoshop Elements (I'm using 2022) can open PSD and ABR files.
I've been using PSE for several years now (in favor of Gimp) and IMO it's an extremely useful environment. I'm especially happy with the navigator program and how it ties into all of this.
Don't get me wrong here: nothing negative about Gimp from me, it's an amazing program. But at the same time I also think it's fair to say that it's no Photoshop either.
Sorry - what is a "style", in this context?
STYLES are effects applied to a layer. It includes all effects applied, like Drop Shadow, Stroke, Outer Glow, etc...
Ron's Brushes includes a bunch of "Styles" that can be applied to the layers containing his brushes or any other layer you would like to apply them to -
Think of styles as sort of a macro for layers; for example, you might have a style that takes text, adds a stroke, adds a glow effect behind it, and creats a second layer below tht has a drop shadow.
ps styles and shapes *.asl and *.csh can't be used in gimp, but i use the brushes (*.abr) all the time in gimp without any problem.
Just save the brushes to your brushes folder, like c:user/username/appdata/roaming/gimp/2.10/brushes
And have you been able to use Ron's brushes that say "Photoshop CC 2021 only" or not? I'm interested because I may want to upgrade to PSE 2022 on the new laptop I just bought.
I didn't really say that. All Ron's brushes that are more than a couple of years old work perfectly. The newest ones: some have Photoshop CS versions (and can be use), the others don't work on my PSE2018 and may or may not (awaiting answer from ShelLuser who posted above) in the latest PSE. Just make sure you read the store page carefully for the brush set(s) you are interested in getting.
Actually I've been using PSE (various versions) and buying and using Ron's brushes for over 10 years.
[Edit to clarify]
Sorry, accidental double post.
I use Paint Shop Pro, now version 2021. I can use PS abr brushes other than some of the newer ones. BUT, some of the newer ones have to be converted to back versions using ABRMate. its an older program, I think, but it works, so the newer abr versions end up working. Its a free program.
Just so you know, you can convert the newer brushes into the older versions of Photoshop (Choose PS-7 to really go back) using ABR Mate.
And, with ABR Mate, if all else fails, you can export the brushes as PNG files. Some of Ron's Brushes have PNG versions of the brushes ina folder as well.
Converting Photoshop Brushes with abrmate tutorial
As a side note for anyone interested, Krita not only supports Photoshop brushes (.abr) but evidently also supports Photoshop layer styles (https://docs.krita.org/en/user_manual/introduction_from_other_software/introduction_from_photoshop.html). I haven't tried using Photoshop Layer styles, but I have played around with Krita a fair bit, and it's an extremely good product. Gimp is my go to for postwork (I don't do that much), but I might have to start using Krita more if I can easily use some of the newer Deviney products ... sometimes I want to add a little extra and his brushes/FX would really help
I use PSE22 and Ron's brushes & styles work though the brush size is limited to 2500px not any bigger .. but you can select the bigger brushes e.g.. 4000px but it reverts to 2500pxls.. if that makes sense...
attached are some of Ron's brushes I use in PSE22
I have an older version of PSE (v14) and can access the full range of brush sizes (up to 5000px) by holding down the Alt key plus the right mouse button and then moving the mouse from side to side.
You may like to try this to see whether it also works with the version you have.
Thanks. I think I have most of the ones you show working in PSE9 and 2018 (I love Ron's brushes and have 69 sets so far).
I'm interested in this one from your list that said CC only: Ron's Sand - so maybe PSE2022 is a good idea for me.
Now that is a very promising idea, I'll try it why I get the chance. Thank you!
I never knew this.... it works on my PSE22 .. thanks for that tip
