Creating Shader files

I'm back with another newbie question. I have several image files that I'd like to make as my own shader presets. So I loaded a primitive and applied the textue file via the surfaces tab. When satisfied with the result, I saved it as a shader preset to one of my DAZ format directories. To test it, I opened a different object, made my way to that directory and applied it.  Bingo! It worked like a charm. The next step I took was to open the preset file in a text editor (Notepad++) to see how easily it could be edited. Well, that's where the road ended; the file doesn't open intelligibly, just a screen full of jibberish.  Other user files I have open nicely in a text editor. I'm thinking that creating it in DS codes it so that a text editor is unable to read it. If so, is there a way to create these files so that they can be easily edited?

All that's wrong is that they are compressed...you need to manually uncompress them in order to edit them.

Or, at the bottom of the save dialog box is a check box for compressing them.  Uncheck it and you won't have to worry about it.

  • WOW! Just that simple. Con mucho thankos. :O)

It's even worse for me...my native text editor will work with zipped text files, so I have to triple check to make sure I'm not compressing them before letting things out into the wild.

Oooh, ooh! Open source/freeware? Which one? Should I upgrade from EditPad Lite 7? (How old is that ... 10 years, or something like that.)

    KATE/Kwrite...seamlessly opens compressed files.

One of the add-on/replacement Notepad ones can do compresed files, but it does require configuration to do so.

Thanks for the heads up. For some reason, I get errors trying to install KATE. I'll try again later, as it might be a problem on their end.
