If you install Linux on the second drive, you can have it install the grub menu on the boot drive and the Linux grub menu will take over as the boot manager. Then, every time you reboot, the grub menu will come up and give you the choice to boot into Windows or Linux.

Because Windows is already installed on the C drive, there will be no issue with drive hierarchy because Windows won't even see the Linux drive (but Linux will see the Windows drive). When installing Linux just make sure that you don't install it on the Windows drive (usually called sda by the Linux installer). Have a quick read over the info here. It's very easy, especially if you have a regular BIOS and no UEFI. If you have UEFI, it's a little bit tricker. Take note that the drive for the boot loader installation SHOULD be the Windows drive, but that would be the only thing you'd want to put on the Windows drive (other than Windows of course ;)).

This was done on Manjaro Linux, everything straight out of the box.

Used q4Wine as the wine front end, downloaded DAZ 4.9 and double clicked on the icon. Wine installed it and it works great, only problem is that the sql can't be found. For me it's not a problem as I don't use the smart content pane. I moved myLibrary to another drive before installing Manjero and just pointed DAZ to the new location.

As you can see from the render it is the 64bit version of DAZ and iray works fine.

Another great thing about Manjaro is the painless set up of the nVidia drivers. Blender, Octane Render and DAZ all detected my GTX780 CUDA Cores on installation with no problem.

Haven't installed the Install Manager yet and probably wont try for a while, I have plenty in my library and with the difference in the dolar between Australi and the US I really can't aford to. Add about 35% to the US price for content and that how much it costs in Aus at the moment.

Sorry it is not a very techie explanation on how I got things working but the truth is I didn't have to do anything real techie. So if you are thinking of moving to Linux, Manjaro might be for you.

Note: I tried Ubuntu and Mint before Manjero and never got as far as having the nVidia drivers installed corectly for Blender to see my GTX780, just a lot of crashes and rebooting only to find the graphics not working at all, just a dark screen.

Hi there, can you tell me which version of the Nvidia propretary drivers you are using? For some reason I installed Manhjaro and DS but my GTX 750 is not listed at Render Settings. It's detectable in Help >About Your Video Card tho...

Basically any of the recent ones should work.

Never mind, I got it working now. Thanks again!

...hmm, so if I want to run all my Daz (and other Windows based) software without jumping through tonnes of hoops and having to learn scripting), it sounds like my best bet is a dual boot: Linux for online and W7 for offline. As I understand I can do this either by partitioning my C: drive or have each on separate drives the latter which sounds like less trouble.

I'm reasonably geeky and computer savvy but the last time I tried installing a dual boot I messed up everything.   My solution is to use my older (slow, beat up, ancient) computer for online tasks and as a Linux test box.  I also have an older laptop in case I screw the test box up (done that twice).  My graphics computer never, ever goes online and runs Win7 with most services turned off.  I have no issues with win7 (...ok, one issue) but would desparately love to run all my graphics stuff on Linux.  I'm following this thread and hoping for a straight forward guide to installing and using Daz, Poser, PS, Illustrator, AE and maybe Premiere Pro on it.  I also use Blender but it (wisely) comes in a Linux flavour already.

All of my computers that were made in 2012 and newer, have a UEFI. The one I had that was older had a BIOS. That's not to say that a computer older than that can't have UEFI, it's just that it wasn't widely used until the tail end of Windows 7 and more widely after Windows 8 was released.

Speccy should also tell you if you have a UEFI or not under Operating System/Device Tree

  • As soon as I'm done transferring files, I'm planning to do a step by step with screenshots on how I installed DS on my system for my Lab thread.   Does anyone want the same tutorial posted here or just a link to my thread?

    Hi Knittingmommy,

A link will work for me. And thanks I hope your file transfer goes smoothly.

  • I thought I'd post the first render out of my new setup with DS in Linux.  There are some redrawing issues with my preferred workspace, but nothing I can't work around.  Loading seems a little slower and since I don't have the database working yet, I have to rely on just using the folders instead of the alphabetized listing that I used before.  I found directions for setting up ProgestreSQL that someone has on their DA page which they claim is working in DS and with Connect.  Not sure if I want Connect working, but we'll see what I can do with it tomorrow.

So, I've spent most of my day trying to get the database stuff working in DS.  Not much luck.  I've tried using the instructions I found here.  So far, I've been able to install ProstgreSQL 4.5 on my system and I can access it from the terminal.  I was able to create and access a test database.  I was able to then make a database for DS based on the instructions that I linked.  However, I have not been able to get DS to be able to access the database.  I got through all of the steps without any errors, but, when I load DS, it doesn't seem to see it and I get an error message:

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be missing or what I might be able to try to get cms working?

  • Can you try to run the DS4.9 from terminal and copy-paste all the stuff it's posting in terminal while running up? I'm not promising it will help, but it might contain some clue as to what is happening.

I will see if I can figure that out.  I know I've done that at least once before successfully.

  • So, I found how to run it in Terminal and copied everything from loading DS to shutting it down.  I have no idea how to read this stuff. I did see one line that stood out to me that kind of makes sense, but I'm not sure if that is the problem or not.  There is a line that says something about not starting ProstgreSQL CMS from an unlimited account because it causes problems.  I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with that though.  There are a LOT of lines that start with fixme:  Yeah, I have no idea how to fix any of those.

I'm not a Linux expert, but it certainly looks like it's saying that it does not allow PostgreSQL to be launched from an account with administrator privileges.  Under Windows, while an account with administrator privileges CAN launch a program with elevated privileges, by default it does not, so using an administrator account is not an issue (although running PostgreSQL with elevated privileges can cause problems, so you should run it with the default non-administrator privileges).  I don't know if the situation is the same under Linux - if it is, then the question is whether Wine can be configured to allow an administrator account to launch a database server in an unprivileged mode.  Is it possible for you to create an unprivileged user account to test if that resolves the issue?

I think I can either modify my account to have limits or create an account that has limits for use with DS.  I'm not sure which is easier.  I'll have to look into that.  Probably the safest would be for my account to have more limits as I can always log in as root if I need more permissions for something.  It never occurred to me that there would be a problem with my account being unlimited since I'm the only one who uses this computer.  I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see what happens with a more limited account and how it affects PostgreSQL.

I'm nowhere near being a Linux expert so I wasn't sure if I was reading and interpreting that line correctly or not.  Thanks for at least confirming my suspicions as to a possible problem.  Of course, that doesn't mean it is the only one.  :)

  • Personally I would try to create an extra account, so you don't mess up anything in yours. And if it doesn't work, you can always delete it. But maybe limiting your own account can help too.

As to the output: fixme's you don't have to worry about. This is wine "fixing" error on the spot. The ones you should care about are "err"s which indicate errors wine didn't manage. In this case on one hand this "ntlm_auth" error and on the other hand the user privileges regarding the PostgreSQL.

  • Okay.  I'll see what I can do in the morning about setting up an account with limited permissions just for use with DS and see how that goes.  Thanks.

  • Okay, so, I was able to figure out how to create a new user account with just standard, nonadministrative privileges in Linux Mint.  They had changed it slightly from previous versions so it wasn't exactly in the same place.  That gives me a fresh, basic account with nothing in it!  Nothing from the other account is installed in this account.  I'm not sure yet if this means I also have to reinstall ProstgreSQL as well.  Looking into that before I get started with anything else.  I will have to try reinstalling DS fresh and go through all of the steps again to see if it works once I figure out the PostgreSQL stuff.  I'll keep you updated, but it might take me a day or two to get there.

Okay, everyone, here is where I'm at and, of course, I need help figuring out what is wrong.

I completely redid everything under a new user account with standard account privileges instead of superuser privileges.  I completely redid the creating the database as I wasn't sure I had that right to start with.  It was easier once I finally figured out how to get pgAdmin III connected to my postgreSQL server.  I got that all done.

Installed DS 4.9.2.70 in Wine with Windows XP per the instructions I linked in an earlier post.  I created the cmscfg.json file to point to the postgreSQL and put it in the correct spot.  I installed a really fresh as in I deleted any and all old stuff from the old wine install that wasn't working.

And, this time I run the program and get absolutely no messages that it can't find cms.  So, cms seems to have been found.  I get the intro box asking to connect and I input my email and password to sign in and connect.  And, it won't connect.  I just get an error box with an 'X' in it.

Okay, so I can't connect, but I have everything off to the side that makes it look like I have cms working.  I just don't have anything installed.  So, I thought I would borrow the test directory where I installed just as few items from my previous install with DIM when I wasn't concerned about getting Connect working yet.  I copy and pasted the My DAZ Library in the appropriate spot and then, when I boot up DS, I get an error message that it can't find cms.  But, my files are there only I no longer have the product and category slots there anymore.

So, I uninstall everything again and delete everything and start ALL OVER!  Now, I have another fresh install, with a new database ( wasn't sure if I needed to redo that, but decided it couldn't hurt).  I still can't connect, but I am not getting any kind of cms errors.  Unfortunately, I have nothing installed.  One caveat is that somehow it got my serial number from somewhere for Animate2 so this install of DS knew I had that and input the serial number there.  I have no idea how or where it got that from.  And, I had never gotten around to inputing any serial numbers with these new installs that I recall.

I've never used Connect before.  In Windows, I was still using DIM exclusively.  No, experience with Connect whatsoever.  Can I still install with DIM if I can't use Connect?  Or can I just put a downloaded file somewhere and Connect will find it and install without DIM?

As for the not being able to Connect, I've including the text from running it in the shell.  Maybe someone can see an error that points to what is wrong with the connect:

I don't really understand most of that, but I don't see any glaring errors either.  Now that I actually have DS and apparently running, it sure would be nice to actually add some products in there!

edit: I did find that I could download the Connect Offline Packages, but that doesn't help if I can't connect at least once, from what I read so I still need to figure out why I can't login.

  • The only error I see is this CoGetClassObject class not registred. Not really sure what that means either, googling it says either some dll is missing, or you should install allfonts with winetricks.

    General tips:

    1. Could you try to run the program with either Win7 or Win10 instead of XP (after all 4.9 was made after XP went out of comission).

    2. Try to make a non-default folder with content (so not My DAZ Library but I don't know, any random folder on your hard drive) and map it from DAZStudio. And then see if it restarts with cms still working. Or if it shows everything as intended.

    3. Installing allfonts with winetricks could make the error at connect attempt readable.

I'll try all of that and see what happens.  Thanks for the suggestions.

The instructions I'm following said it specifically wouldn't work with Win 7, not sure about Win 10, but that it did work with Win XP which is why I ran the installer with Win XP.  I installed allfonts, but that didn't help.  Even though I'm not getting any errors that state that the cms isn't connected now, I'm not sure that cms is actually running.  I tried adding a folder with DAZ data in it and while it looked like it accepted it and saved the information, it did not populate any of the folder information into the file tree on the left for the Content Library.  Going back into the CMS manager to see if it was still mapped and it wasn't so it isn't keeping that information.

If I try using Win 10 in Wine for DAZ, do I have to reinstall DAZ again with the installer while Wine is set to Windows 10?

I had better luck with the previous version of DS where I installed with DIM.  At least that version populated all of my products, I just couldn't get the categories and stuff to work.  If anyone has any advice on getting the Valinetine CMS to work, I'll try that with the older DS that I have installed.  I'm open to any suggestions at the moment.  I may have to settle for not having all feature of the database, though.

  • Still trying to get Connect to work.  I've changed some permissions with my postgresql setup and configuration files and it seems to have helped. I seem to have gotten rid of some of the start up errors and created others possibly.  Now when it tries to connect I'm actually getting database errors which look like the following:

This is just a partial listing from the log.txt file from DS.  For the full file if needed you can download it here.  I am unsure if it is actually accessing my postgresql or the version that comes with DS.  Nothing is getiing created in the database that I created for DS as shown in the above linked tutorial from DeviantArt.  I don't know much about postgresql, but it looks like it isn't able to create the tables for the database and populate them.  Do I need to do anything with the PostgresSQL directory that gets installed with DS?  I'm supposedly not using it, am I?

I'm getting kind of frustrated trying to get cms up and running.  Any help would be appreciated.  Any ideas as to what I've done wrong?

The only error I see is this CoGetClassObject class not registred.

No, you don't need to re-install anything. Just run the winecfg of the wine bottle you're using for DAZ and select Win 10 instead of XP. If something won't run after that, you run wincfg again and change back to Win XP.

Still trying to get Connect to work.

I have no clue, but maybe if you could copy an already existing database so that DAZ doesn't have to re-create it, but just add stuff to that? For example do you have a Windows install somewhere where you could copy the database from? Or a DAZ 4.8 wine install?

In a virtual drive, I have dim and DS 4.9.1.30 running and DIM does install now so no more manual downloads.  I did a test install of some files and everything worked fine and DS can see and access the files in the Public My DAZ Library folder.  DIM installed both DIM versions files and Connect versions of the files.  It created a My Connect Library under my username.  There are files in the My Connect Library that DIM installed.  I transferred all of the files from the DS 4.9.1.30 install over to the virtual drive that has DS 4.9.2.70 installed.  I can see all of the files in the regular My DAZ Library.  Nothing shows up in the My Connect Library.  If I browse files in the My Connect Library in DS 4.9.2.70, the files are in My Connect Library right where they are suppose to be in the file browser, but for some reason DS 4.9.2.70 doesn't see them and can't access them inside DS.

Someone was asking about the slider controls in DS and how they work in LInux.  I just thought I'd mention that while they are still screwed up in DS 4.9.1.30, they seem to work much better in DS 4.9.2.70 as I haven't had the same problems with them that I do in the previous version.  DS 4.9.2.70 seems much more stable in Linux than DS 4.9.1.30 and I'll probably end up deleting the virtual drive that has that version in it at some point.

Even without connect working, DIM works and it downloads and installs files correctly.  However, there is still no metadata or files or alphabetic listings.  I can only work with files from the folder tree.  DS can't create categories.  I don't know what I'm missing that will get Connect working and seeing the files.

Unless someone can figure out what I'm not doing correctly, I have to take a break.  I'm going cross-eyed trying to figure it out and I'm not getting much actual rendering done.  For the moment, I'll use what I have and figure the rest out later.  Maybe someone will figure it out while I'm not looking.

edit:  Forget that whole first paragraph because I'm obviously too tired to remember what I've been doing.  DIM didn't install the Connect stuff and I don't know where my head was when I made that statement.  Time to put it on the shelf and just deal with what I've got right now and that is DIM without cms in DAZ Studio, but able to access my account and download and install files the old fashioned way.  I wish I had categories and the alphabetic files list, but I don't.  I'm taking a break so I can actually do some renders.

  • So, while I can render and work in DS, I still haven't gotten CMS of any kind up and working.  I'm still fiddling around with it when I'm not actually rendering stuff.

But, can someone explain to me a couple of things that I've wondered about.  If DS installs with postgreSQL with DS ( I know it does because I can see the directory for it) why can't the version of DS inside Wine use that version of PostgreSQL while running under Wine instead of my installing PostgreSQL for Linux and trying to figure out how to get it to connect?

For that matter, why is it so difficult to get the other type of CMS (whichever it is that looks at DIM installed products) working correctly if everything installs with the program?  I thought the whole idea behind running a program with Wine was that it tricks the program into thinking it is working in a Windows environment, but if DS can't use the database stuff that comes with the program automatically, what am I missing?  I'd really like to understand so I can possibly figure out how to get things working.  It just takes forever to find things since I don't even have any kind of categories working.  Things installed with DIM are NOT neat and tidy.  I really miss having the ability to use categories or the alphabetic product listing.

Sorry if these are really newbie questions that are obvious to everyone else.
