Is there a way to quickly save model settings to speed up posing?

So posing a model can be slow for multiple reasons, mostly subd and smoothing, and I was wondering if there was a way to quickly switch settings for the model for when it comes time to render and the settings for when you are posing that model. Something like a script you can toggle between pose mode and render mode would be super useful, especially if it applied settings to clothing items as well. 

I figure something that obvious has to already exist, I just can't find it.
