December 2022 - Daz 3D New User Challenge - Open Render Challenge

New User's Challenge - December 2022

Sponsored by DAZ 3D

Are you new to the 3D World? Are you at the beginning stages of learning 3D rendering? Have you been around for a little bit but feel you could benefit from some feedback or instruction? Have you been around a while and would like to help other members start their creative journey? Well then come and join the fun as we host our newest render challenge.

This year, we are breaking down each month into 2 different challenges. A Beginner Challenge and then also an Intermediate Challenge.

So which "Challenge" should you choose?

Follow the Beginner Challenge if you are:

  • New to the New User Challenges
  • New to Daz Studio
  • Newer to 3D Rendering in General

Follow the Intermediate Challenge if you have:

  • Participated in the New User Challenge for awhile
  • Know the basics of Daz Studio and would like to learn more in depth topics
  • Been using 3D Rendering Applications for awhile and feel comfortable with learning Intermediate Topics

"Open Render Challenge"

The Open Render Challenge is also referred to as a "free" month, where you can concentrate on using and combining the skills you learned in the past few challenges. Please be sure to mention in which Open Render Challenge (Beginner or Intermediate) you wish to enter into when you add your image to the thread.

Optional: in keeping with the "free" theme, you are encouraged to highlight a free product (either something you obtained for free here at Daz, or a freebie from another source) in your renders. This invitation is just for fun and intended to stimulate creativity, and use of a freebie in your renders won't have any bearing on the judging.

If you would like to review the previous topics and information you can find the topics/threads here:

Beginner/IntermediateComposition and Instancing, & Duplication
Beginner/IntermediateLighting and Light Effects
Beginner/IntermediatePosing and Posing II
Beginner/IntermediateUsing Props and Push Modifiers/Deformers
Beginner/IntermediateScenes, Landscapes, and Working Modularly
Beginner/IntermediatePortrait Rendering and LIE
Beginner/IntermediateDepth of Field and Canvases
Beginner/IntermediateAtmosphere and Ghosts & Special Effects
Beginner/IntermediateMaterials and Next Level Kitbashing

I will be checking in as will the rest of the Community Volunteers to try and help with anything you all may need.
For a list of the current challenge rules, please see this thread: Challenge Rules

You can find the general challenge parameters here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/3440/new-user-challenge-rules-and-regulations
December is generally a Free Month so you can create/render whatever you like as long as you follow the posted rules I linked above and the general information in the main post in this thread. Just let us know whether you want to enter the Beginner or Intermediate Challenge (which would depend on what you want to focus on for your image) You can find the topics at the bottom of the first post to help determine which one you may prefer to enter. If this is your first month (so you've not participated in any of the previous contests) then just pick the one you feel more matches your level of comfort within DS.

    Of Note:
Come January we start the entire challenge over again. We do new topics once a month over the entire year which pretty much introduces you to most features of Daz Studio as a beginner and then you can go back through again using the Intermediate track of the Challenge. If you all ready have familiarity with the beginner topics then you can just jump straight into Intermediate.

If you have any questions, just let us know heart

Just done something, relatively simple, but I had to really work on the material for Photorealistic reasons, and getting a full body figure with loads of skin exposed has always been hard for me to get realistic results with.

"Open Render Challenge" / Intermediate Challange, rendered in Daz Studio with Iray.

This is nice render, however the shadows seem hard. You change the ground shadow in the render settings. Then maybe an emission plane so to lightened the face shadow.
  • @AgitatedRiot Thanks for the tips, but summer shadows are indeed quite harsh, especially on small distances. You can note that it becomes less harsh the further it is away from the object casting the shadow.

As for the face, I think it loks fine as it is, since it gives a quite realistic look and I was going for a slight light/shadow dichotomy.

I did not want to take credit for myself for what I have done, so I did put the details here just in case.

Now about the image upload it does not appear here, or do I have to resize it to submit it again, or do I have to put it in my gallery, please let me know

That's the fine main thing you are happy with your work. However, you were having problems with skin details. I can relate to this. For perfect details, lighting is the key. Yes, you are correct summer shadows are dark.

    This is not an entry.

I want you to reach your goal of achieving more details in the skin in your renders.

Here it goes again, I have had to fix the Cocktail glass; the file have been resized in Paint.net, nothing else have been altered.

The file size have been reduced from 8.36 MB to 595 KB, with an image quality of 77%

If there is anything about the picture fize size, I would like to know what is the maximum size to be uploaded.

  • Somewhere between 8 and 10. Saving the file as a jpg file will compress it to a manageable file size I have posted a lot of Ultra HD images after saving them to .jpg

  • @AgitatedRiot, very well, I am posting the image again, this time around, is maximum quality with a filesize of no more than 4 MB.

Previously I tried with the original Png file, I could not upload it here,

    Have a look at that.

  • @AgitatedRiot, While JPG file format is mostly used over the web, is a losy file.

I had to use GIMP to convert the original PNG image to JPG.

I know for many is practical to get this file format, just for download speed.

Actually you can do it in Daz. Just use the drop box when you give it a name, png to jpg.

@Halcon Bluesky, congrats on posting your first image :)  It's a nice setup and you are certainly braver than me - it took me 4 or 5 images before I had a model facing forward and had to deal with ensuring the face was lit well. Hopefully, you'll be able to post some renders more often now :)

  • @Halcon Bluesky, I took a close look at yours, and the reflections are lovely. Like the look of what is outside the windows. All great work. One tiny problem her foot goes thru the floor in front of the chair. Other than that, great job.

  • @AgitatedRiot, I will see if I can fix that and post here the result

  • @SofaCitizen, Well is not easy, I had to wrestle with every aspect of the image.

The first version I was about to post here, I thought it was good, then I did look at that, the glass was floating not in the hand of the model.

I did a new version and corrected the problem, now I don't know if the 3rd version will be ok, I am nervous, but I will try my best

Detective Wagner has some pressing questions he needs to ask the new widow regarding the circumstances of her husband's death.
But is he in control of the interrogation or falling for her charms? Who is here cat and who is mouse?

I can't post the image directly into the comment like Daedalus-7 and AgitatedRiot did. "The comment is n characters too long". How is this done?

    Thx for your help.

Are you happy with it?  I have no other comments. You can see her feet. The main thing is you are satisfied with it.

Thanks for the concern, but the lack of detail on the skin in my image is the result of the post-processing, rather than a problem with the illumination. I've attached the original render so that you can see the difference. Also, the skin texture I am using doesn't have a lot of details either.

great thing you joined, it can be a bit scary at first but we're all here to learn and you've made a great start and I think you've got an itneresting idea there, a modern day queen and I like that her colours are matching the throne as well. The room is nice with the windows and paintings. There is one thing I wonder, the floor is very glossy which was a surprised compined with a sort of stone that usually is a bit rough. Did you want it to be so glossy? if not you can check out the glossyness and reflective settings in the surface tab of the floor shader.

  • Linwelly, thanks for the compliments.

When I tried to post the image here, the embarrasment I got was to post the details of the render, the picture was not there, I realized later the picture format accepted is JPG, not the native PNG file format I had saved.

I am not sure about the floor surface, some floors of this kind are glossy in real life.

Also, I did not want to alter too much the image, just to look more natural. Do I have to reduce the glossyness of the floor?

I started out of wits, with the small resources I have, I wish I could have something more different to use in the renders.
