painting layers

This is surely a stupid question but I have wasted too much time trying to figure it out.  How can I start with an object that I just want to paint a small portion of the object not the whole thing. ?  It wont let you do anything until you pick a part on the object, but when you add a color it paints the whole thing.  I want to paint on top of the color thats already there.  Thanks

I don't know about Carrara but since nobody else has replied, I'll give it a go. smiley

Wouldn't you have more control if you "painted" on a virtual "flat surface" with Photoshop or in a vector art package (like Ilustrator or Corel Draw; Open Office has a vector module as well if I remember correctly) and then you apply this new "texture" file that you've created, to the polygon object in your modelling program? At least that is my understanding of how it works. If you only have part of the texture "coloured" and the rest is white or black say, then only part of your model will be colored.
