E-GPU how much performance is lost?

Hello,
So I'm thinking about adding an E-GPU to my system but I can't really find info on how much performance is lost due to the Thunderblot connection.
I know that there is a big los while gaming but what about IRay rendering? Is it much slower than the PCI-E connection?
I'd use a RTX 3090 with Thunderbolt 3 because there aren't any E-GPU cases with TB 4 right now.
Has someone tested this or maybe some benchmarks of this case?
Thank you.
