NEWB Question IRAY Engine

PYuknisPYuknis Posts: 20

IMAC I5 with AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB. I understand that the IRAY Engine is for Nvidia, but having a Radeon card does this mean:

1) IRAY Rendering will not work?

2) Will work, but much slower?

3) WIll work, but slower and Lower quality?

I start IRAY and seems to be working. The render progress window seems to disappear after some time. I cant tell if it is still processing, or stopped. The output window is still there and the save option is unavailable like it's still working.

If you don;t have an nVidia card, Iray will default to using the CPU only, so it will depend on how much processing power you have in that.   What processor do you use, and how much RAM do you have?

As long as the Save option is unavailable it is still running. You can stop it at any time during the render and save the resulting image or resume the render.

Thanks. I have an IMAC running a I5 and 12Gig of RAM.

An i5 chip should be a quad core, and have at least 4 threads (possibly 8), and 12 GB is plenty of memory.   Iray is a completely different renderer to 3Delight (as you may know) but it should still render fairly quickly on an i5, depending on what lighting you are using.   I have an i7, and I can render a simple scene in a few minutes using Iray at the Viewport size.

What lighting are you using, and what size of image?   Iray will take longer than 3Delight, but it does give excellent results.

What settings will improve the detail for an IRAY Render? For example a close up of Veleria's face?

If you are getting a lack of detail, then the render has not run for long enough, or there is too little light in the Scene.

What lighting are you using, what size is the rendered image, and can you post a screenshot of what you mean by lack of detail?

I was refering to general render settings, not ready to tackle lighting in that detail yet. I do understand that has much to do with quality. I found the tutorials somewhat lacking in detail of this subject.
