New install of DAZ Studio 4.20 pro
Add a basic character to scene. 8.1 female
Use builtin pose control to lower arms and shoulder distorts. looks painful.
Is this to be expected? looks awful

That looks as if there is an additional character or shape pack installed with a badly set up joint correction of some kind. Enable Preferences>Show Hidden Proerpties in the Parameters pane option menu and look for things that appear under currently Used only after applying the bend.
