W10 - D/S - space issues - {problem identified - hair shader eating RAM}

Catherine3678abCatherine3678ab Posts: 8,334

I know, my laptop doesn't have a lot of space but still there are oodles of GBs not being used -> on the D drive.
While trying to render 1 figure with clothes and geoshell makeup and hair ran into space issues, warning popped up from OS.
C was down to 5GBs [from over 22GB] just trying to get the render going. D/S was the only program running.

Figure with makeup geoshell and clothing will render in about 2 minutes. The hair ALONE will never render.
In very little time the GBs took a nose dive while trying to render the hair ALONE. I stopped it at 10GBs as I'm not trying to kill the computer. No sign of hair.

Now my big question is: Is there someway to make D/S use that lovely space in the D drive [internal SSD] instead of the C drive???  tia

eta: This is the hair but that's not the main problem. https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-high-voltage-hair-for-genesis-3-and-8-females  {although why it should require over 15GBs to render I don't know}

    This is quite a clear article on how to change the various 'temp' locations in Windows itself:

    How to Change Temp Folder Location in Windows 10 - StackHowTo

    (for the nervous... it's a very simple and safe procedure, no registry editing involved, no risk of death!)

    Have you changed Studio's temp location? The one found in preferences.

    I have mine all seperated out and on my fastest drive, see attached.

    I was going to say, one should have 100GB's free for C-drive, but then I realized it's about the size of your whole drive...

    Check the root of the C-drive, do you have hiberfile.sys, pagefile.sys and/or swapfile.sys in there? (see the attachment for folder options)

    There are ways to increase the size of your C-drive without changing the drive, but as yours is a laptop, the space needs to be taken from D-drive

  • If you have your content on the C drive that probably what's taking up all the space. Just find your My Library folder and copy to the D drive then open DS and point it to the new folder location. Check that all content shows up, then delete the My library folder off the C drive.

    No ... it's W10 that takes most that space. And gobbles up the remaining bit everytime there are updates.

    The external E drive -- that's my D/S content ;-)

    Oh golly, is that what this is, the temp folder, ... okay I will change this. I had changed it a long ago but had to revert to the default for Headshop. As I no longer have Headshop on board, will certainly change the temp back to the D drive. Thank you :-)

    Yeah, it looked so big when I bought but then so quickly filled up! Am saving for a "real" computer ...

    Wonderful, thank you :-)

    The things PerrtiA mentioned are also moveable, though generally windows does a good job of managing it's virtual memory!

    They're actually in the same dialog, see attached:

    End result.

    Well, the new TEMP folder was found by the AV which offered to empty them for me ;-)

    I set up 4 of the Windows temp references [from the posted image] as well as the D/S temp folder all to the same folder on the D drive.

    The 'red line' activity was NOT solved by making new TEMP folder. D/S was using the new temp folder. Nobody knows what the OS was doing ... there was still a drain on the C drive and no image getting rendered. In trying to capture notes and logs, missed a few but did get these:

    DAZStudio.exe caused UNKNOWN_ERROR in module "C:\Windows\System32\KERNELBASE.dll" at 0033:0000000056B04FD9, RaiseException()+105 byte(s)

    Then I started over "one by one" to find the problem. It is the shader on the Hair. The earrings render fine, so does the hair cap. But not the hair. And in trying to do whatever with the hair, the memory on the C drive rockets down.

    Applying a regular Iray shader [had to clear it out by going to 3D then back to Iray] to the hair, then it would render fine, no red line.

    Attached image is with the regular Iray shader.

    Something is amiss with the original shader preset.png

    Thank you. I did look at that sometime ago ... AFAIK W10 is managing it fine. Might take another look at it after I get some sleep ;-)
