Grouped items visibilty?

When I hide an item group, those items are still rendered in Iray preview mode, only switching modes and then back will the items be hidden. Is there a setting for this, or is it a quirk of the program/render engine?

if you have just the group name showing (the items hidden -- closed up) turning off the visiblity icon for the group, may not be turning off the sub-listings
It's often necessary to cntrl click the group icon to turn off all of them.

I already tried ctrl clicking. The render window doesn't even refresh when hiding the group.
