Filters for the DIM

The DIM will ask if I want to save files downloaded as a filter. Then it has an option to choose where to save the filter. What is the advantage of saving a filter? Is there a place where the filter is best saved? (I'm on a Macintosh, using 10.10 the latest OS.)

If there is a filter you use often then save it and it will appear in the menu under the button to the left of the filter text box.
