Upgrade to RTX 3080 : can I keep my current configuration?

Hello All,

My sister is keen to give me her GC as she changed her job, it's a RTX  3080 TI, to replace my 2060

Can you confirm I can install it with my current system or , in case I should change something, what should I change , I have a very limited $300 budget if necessary,

Thanks a lot  !

K

Check the new card dimensions to be sure your system has physical room for it.Some graphics cards are large, both in length and number of PCIe slots required.

Check your power supply's capacity.  If it is over 700W, you should be OK.

What is the current power supply in the PC?

600W, if it's not enough I can buy a bigger one. I was more concerned about the CPU etc

My intuition is that, if your computer can run Windows 11, it can run a 3080ti. As others have pointed out, you'll want a more powerful PSU, and I'd definitely recommend more RAM, aside from the size and space constraints. You might want to consider running the 2060 in addition to the 3080ti.

I will get a 850W PSU so I have some room for future improvement. I thouth my RAM would be enough though. On running both cards do you think it will help ? I'm rendering on 1500*1200 but wiht 3 to 5 characters. The aim with the 3080 is to  get renders done faster, I have a figure in mind but it might be wrong : I'm hoping my renders can be 2x faster.

If a given scene will fit onto your 2060, then it can be rendered on both the 2060 and 3080ti, meaning that it will be even faster than the 3080ti on its own. If it doesn't fit onto the 2060, then only the 3080ti will be used. In either case, you can keep the 2060 driving your monitor(s), freeing up some VRAM on your 3080ti.

Also, 16GB of RAM is basically the bare minimum to run a computer these days. Renders don't take place entirely on your GPU(s); they require system memory as well, and bigger scenes don't only require more VRAM, but more RAM as well.

How is your case and cooling, P?  The RTX 3080 TI can get pretty hot.

That sounds interesting but two GC might require much more fans I suppose. And what about the space : I will have to understand how connect two CG as I have no clue on this :-).

It's a RTX 3080, not a TI, does it change something on heat ? I  hope it des.

For the RAM you're teaching something to me as I 'd never thought that RAM was involved except for saving. So I'll get another 16GB too, but I need to understand where I'll plug them as all the slots are taken - from memory-.

    Thanks for the tips!

The cooling is OK now but indeed it will be a concern.

In fact step by step I'm piling spending while I thought I should be fine :-)

1- I need to upgrade my PSU to 700W minimum (150€)

2-  I need to buy more RAM say 16GB (70€)

    3-  Fans ?

But these advices are excactly what I need, I prefer to get it righ and spend a bit that getting all burned.

    Cheers

If your RAM slots are full, you can't "add" another 16GB. You would have to remove the 16 you have and buy 32 (or more). Check your motherboard specs to see how much it can handle. RAM comes in pairs. Your 16 GB would be 2 8s or 4 4s. Check what you really have installed now.
