no sound when importing audio?

in Technical Help (nuts n bolts)

Hi, I'm running 4.20.0.17 on a mac - I'm trying to import an audio file, but when I do (Edit-Audio) and press play, I get no sound. I've tried with wav, mp3 and aiff - nothing. Am I missing something?
