nothing is happening during render

At the time of this image, I was rendering for an hour and a half with nothing appearing. As I post this, we are passed the two hour mark with NOTHING being rendered.

  • What are your render settings? What is in the scene? The first time 3Delight touches a figure/prop with HD details and using an SSS shader it has to pause while it calculates the scattering within the volumne, though I admit an-hour-and-a-half is a long time to take for that.

    One G2M character with bodyhair. No background or other props besides a pair of swimming shorts.I gave up and stopped it after four hours and seeing nothing on the screen. I rendered it is IRAY and was done in ten minutes. I would have preferred 3Delight because they appear to do better for G2 but I just didn't want to keep waiting.

  • Might have been a mix of SSS and the transparency maps on the hair (or, if it the hair was done with displacement, that would have compounded the SSS/high resolution mesh issues). Still, it does sound remarkably slow.

    @Drogo,

    I think I have encountered the same (or similar) problem with a 3DL render that I attempted yesterday and today.  I loaded the 3DL version of Miranda’s Ice Cream Parlor (https://www.daz3d.com/miranda-s-ice-cream-parlor) with accompanying 3DL lights and Josie Teen 6 (https://www.daz3d.com/teen-josie-6).  I used Zev0’s Growing Up for Genesis2 Female(s) and V6 (https://www.daz3d.com/growing-up-for-genesis2-female-s-v6) to shape the figure into a 10-year old girl.  I then added the leggings and top from Afternoon Heat Outfit for Genesis 2 Female(s) (https://www.daz3d.com/afternoon-heat-outfit-for-genesis-2-female-s) and PixiePerfect Hair for Genesis 2 Female(s) (https://www.daz3d.com/pixieperfect-hair-for-genesis-2-female-s).  I posed a scene and followed the vendor’s rendering recommendation (“Important: For quicker render times, delete any objects not seen by camera.”)

    A default sized (1300 by 1000 pixels) 3DL render was taking a long time for only a few rows of pixels to be rendered.  I changed the render size to 600 by 462 pixels, but that did not speed up a render.  Even a  small spot render of just the face took about four minutes.  I finally let the 600 by 462 pixel sized render go until finished and it was just over 17 minutes.  The render is attached.  When I periodically checked my GPU and CPU stats in the Windows Task Manager during the render, my GPU was running at 100 percent the entire time and my GPU was running between 1 percent and 7 percent the entire time.

    Deleting the hair and then the G2F character and clothing sped up the rendering speed a little.  The CPU utilization was still maxed out and  the GPU utilization was still very low.

    I loaded the Iray version of the ice cream parlor (no parts deleted) and lights and turned off CPU in Advanced Render Setting and a decent (but unfinished) Iray render appeared after about 30 seconds. CPU utilization stayed around 20 percent and  the GPU utilization was still very low.

    I finally loaded two of the earliest Daz store products that I own (Dark Places: Sewer 2k9 – SKU 2246; release date in 2004 and Cow – SKU 354; date not available ) and rendered the scene in 3DL.  It took about 2 seconds.
