Advice needed for external HDD for laptop with tiny internal HDD

I am having a problem with my current laptop.  Its HDD is way to small for 3D artwork and storage of 3D assets.   I do have another laptop but its battery is bad and also I don't have a charger that will work with it.

Would a portable external HDD help?  or should I just use this laptop for games and surfing, and get a new battery and charger for the other one.

Yes. Get all your content off the internal HDD onto the external drive, even if you do get the other laptop working.
