Tutorials for creating new figures from scratch.

Hi all! I have created a number of figures for my work that are literally a main body and appendages, whether that's landing gear or three legged aliens.
So far that has meant making the objects in Blender and after import, making sure they are stacked correctly in the hierarchy window.
But many folks have suggested converting them to figures... but I not only have no clue on this, but I don't even know the language to search properly.
Are there tutorials out there that I can find or even could someone tell me the keywords to search for?
Thanks!!

These are a little dated in parts [minor name changes for a tool or two] but still good tutorials.
