RTX 3090 struggling with hair?
Hi there
I just upgraded to a new RTX 3090 and to my surprise the performance in the preview tab is very bad when hairs are in the viewport. It was struggling before a little bit with my old GPU and hairs that lets you hide or show the preview...but with my new RTX, even hais like the ones from Linday give me a struggle, which were fine before.
It gets so bad that I can't have 2 hairs in view and I have to hide it completely, or else I get like 2 fps when navigating around.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a known issue? I did install the newest GeForce Game Ready driver, released on april 26
Rendering times are better btw...so the new card doesn't seem like a total disaster...
I'm using Daz Studio 4.15

Are you using the Iray DrawStyle, and are they dForce hairs?
I'm just using the texture shaded viewport.
And it struggles with various hairs.
Some examples:

I know the first bunch are very bad and there is an option to switch off the preview.
But the point is it's much worse now with my new card and even with the last 2 hairs from Linday it's struggling, which it wasn't before with the old card.
You might check the settings in Edit>Preference>Interface, it's possible soem have reset to a lower performance option with the new hardware.
In this window I attached?
I never used that in my life...what should I change here?
I tried with different values for Texture resources but I didn't see a recognizeable difference...
Those settings look fine, I doubt that they are the issue or different from before. Sadly I am not sure why you would be seeing a slow down in that case.
If you really want to see if your GPU is performing any type of "Workload" - Get the application HWInfo - take a look at your GPU - you can check to see if its even working hard in the Texture Shaded Viewport
Sorry for making you go around the long way but it will be a more satisfying answer for the amount of $ you dropped on what probably feels like a paper weight seeing as how it didnt help your "comfort". Trust me, I know.
If you had Hardware monitoring - you would see that dForce Hair is by far the Heaviest on.... RAM!
Texture Shaded mode - works out your GPU very little - Monitor would show you that Texture shaded mode + laggy view = Not a GPU issue. But if you look at you RAM usage you should see it peaking into the Red! near BSOD territory depending on what you do.
Focus on your RAM - dForce loads on ram. When you are filling it up, you will see the issues your reported. I can get up to 2-3 dForce Hairs in Texture Shaded on 64GB of RAM. the 4th dForce Hair usually causes so much uncomfortable lag that I need to Undo.
Good luck with your findings. Monitor your hardward to find out what you need to upgrade depending on what kind of scenes you want to do. GPU is really JUST for Rendering. Loading, Smoothness and how the software performs is usually CPU and RAM, sometimes HDD too.
AMD 3950X
RTX 3080x2
and in Texture Shaded mode - Daz 4.20+ performs the same as my i7-4790k and RX 580.
Thanks, that's interesting and I will check that application out.
HOWEVER...I did change nothing except the GPU and now it is performing much worse in texture shaded mode... And I have 64GB of RAM + an AMD 3950X.
I have more issues and lag with 1 of Lindays hair loaded than with 4 before...
