Newbie question - lighting

I'm sure this is just a newbie issue I haven't figured out.

When loading a scene I've purchased - usually some sort of indoor environment - the whole scene is dark and I can't really see to place figures and pose them.  I can create a spotlight temporarily to point at them, but on occasion that doesn't even help.  The scene renders with properly lighting and I don't want to change that lighting, but I can't see to work.  Is there some sort of viewport option I can choose that lets me see everything in the scene clearly while working that doesn't affect the rendered lighting?

If the viewport drawstyle options are in nVidia Iray mode,an indoor environment without lights is dark, it is normal.

Adding point lights or spotlights with correct settings (position of the light, luminance, etc)will give you the lighting that you need for your render.

If the viewport drawstyle options are in Texture Shaded mode, the lights you add may be unsufficient, given that adding lights turns the default camera's headlamp off.

Ctrl_L shortcut will give you the light you need to work easily.
