Unauthorized NFT

Jason GalterioJason Galterio Posts: 2,555
April 2022 in Non-Fungible Token (NFT) Art

Logged into my DA account this morning and found an automated alert. DA had detected that one of my images had been used for an NFT on OpenSea.

It gave me two options; ignore it or file a takedown notice.

The takedown notice was surprisingly easy. The link provided the form with most of the relevent fields filled out. All I needed to do was put my real name in and my email address.

A head's up in case anyone was curious about how it worked.

About 4 hours after I filed the report, I received an email from OpenSea saying that the NFT has been removed from sale.

    No fuss, little effort.

I'm glad that they responded as quickly and efficiently - sadly not all copyright takedowns are treated with such respect.

Well, this particular person has a few dozen of NFTs using pictures culled from this forum.

I can tell the source because of the version of the picture of mine that they used. The cropping was different than the picture I posted on DA, but matched what I posted here.

Same here. I announced it yesterday but my message was removed from the forum, hmmm.

For me it tooks just half an hour until my picture was gone from OpenSea, but I saw a lot of well known renders on the seller page of this "artist" ...007! I'm surprised the new DA protection works so well and also the form for the takedown.

Sounds like the same individual, 007, that I encountered.

.Yes, I was pretty impressed with the DA software. The version of the image this person used was an uncropped version I posted here. The one on DA was cropped, but otherwise identical. DA still caught the connection.

    Don't accuse specific people.

Is it really an accusation though?

The "artist" name on OpenSea ends with 007. They have dozens of NFTs currently on sale using artwork from here.

As one of the aggrevied parties, whose artwork was stolen, I take siginificant offense that this person is not only selling my work, but also claiming that they made the artwork.

Here is the proof, which doesn't include anyone's name.

On their catalog page they say how they have been using DS to create the images...  which is funny, since I rendered this in Reality / Luxrender. A technicality sure, but still.

I come across artists on various sites who've had their work stolen and then sold as NFTs.

At this point you cannot convince me that NFTs are legit.

That's the catch... The NFT's are legit, but the concept does not provide any proof of legitimacy for the digital content found behind the link contained in the NFT - The content is not the NFT, the link is.

That is pretty much the DEFINITION of "not legit"

No, it just means it has no bearing on legitimacy.

Rich people with too much money intersecting with speculators hoping to take that money.

Have I mentioned how much it irks me how hard they try to get people on board with NFTs on the front page?

NFTs will fail eventually -and it's already failing right now- because it has systemic flaws you can't handwave away.

And fixing it means you just end up with what we already had but a bit more decentralized.
