How do I export an animated model

It seems to me that should be automatic but It isn't.
I made a short keyframe animation then chose to export as FBX,3ds and .x all of which are formats that can be animated.

I made a short keyframe animation and tried exporting in those formats but none of them exported the animation.

I've Googled looking for it and searched the forums with no luck. I'm new to Carrara so bear with me.

are you choosing scene save as or selecting something and using export as?

the latter will only do the selected item

what are you exporting to?
