Question about Environment Mode

in Technical Help (nuts n bolts)

Just want to make sure I am not going nuts. HDRI affects Scene Only right? I changed the HDRI and swtich to scene only and the render looks very different. The render is done with roof hidden.

How does this work? I thought HDRI only works with a dome and HDRI shouldn't matter without a dome.

    Dome and Scene uses the HDRI. Scene Only uses only the lights in the scene not the HDRI in the Dome because Dome wont be used.

    That's what I thought but when I changed the Environment Map (this is HDRI right?) and switched to Scene Only the render changes. Not the same as Dome and Scene but the renders are different with different Environment Map under Scene Only.
