One more iray render with Nik Tools applied in post

and also with Topaz Clean afterwards.

This one is VERY interesting. I like the rough edges on the arm textures, but not so much on the horse portion. The effect on the hair is also very interesting, although it does break down a little when reduced. However... if I'm being honest, it looks like a 3D model that has been processed by a filter(s). By this, i mean I like where it's going, and maybe you should try to take it to a few more levels to see what you can get. Just a thought, because I do like it, but i think it could be more.

@mmitchell_houston Haha. I did the same thing when I learned about it. I wanted to go fix all my animations. It is even more funny because I first notices it on Cthulhu's tail. And still go back and look at it.  So I guess I am sensitive to that. Anyway here is a screenshot of Whereit is. On my mac It is the very top row above the window but I am actually not familliar with Poser 11 on a PC:

Thanks, David. It's in the same place on a PC. I tried it, and it did help. I'll keep that in mind for future renders!

After update to Poser 11, finally my graphic card (Nvidia GTX 1080) can be used to render in Superfly without crashing Poser.

Below is a Poser 11 Superfly render of XinXin treated with Topaz Clean filter in post.

Dang. I thought I was finished, but it turned out that the black outlines were too thin when I reduced it for print. So, I had to go through and manually pump them up.

I'm finally getting caught up after time away doing some writing.  I think this is my favorite thing.  Nicely done, MM.

You guys have all been busy on the thread.  I love the comic stuff.  I haven't delved into comics much yet.  You guys all blow me away.  So much talent!

Is Topaz free?  I have Poser Deput but have not bought Poser 11.  I don't know if it is worth it.

  • Worlds_EdgeWorlds_Edge Posts: 2,152

@tkdrobert Topaz is not free.  They have a lot of great plug ins for photoshop (I don't know what other programs it works with, probably lightroom etc).  "Clean" is one of their filters.  They also have filter bundles.  I believe they have free trials and also their website shows before/after effects.

Daz Studio with Akvis Sketch and Photoshop for post work. I think the pose is off -- the top arm looks weird to me.

EDIT: I moved the arm down a little. I think it looks better, but opinions welcome.

I love it! It does give it a traditional look to it.

Top arm on the right image looks better to me, mmitchell_houston

Great technique on this,  just the right comicbook hand drawn styling.

Dang it. The other version I did isn't usable -- the composition was wrong and it didn't work with the text elements in the design (which aren't shown here). Again, Daz Studio 4.9 with Akvis Sketch 19.1.

I had a few more problems with Sketch this time around. I kept getting really rough, thick edge lines that had to be touched up in Photoshop. Fortunately, this is supposed to look rough, so I could fudge on some of the clean-up I would normally do on an image like this.

I don't want to go into detail on any particular image, but I've got to admit that Topaz Clean is delivering some good results. But -- and this could just be my aesthetic and I'm now referring to the images themselves instead of Topaz Clean -- although a lof of the images look nicer, many of them still look like CGI that's been cleaned up. A lot of it has to do with the number of reflections and the lack of consistent, strong outlines. Now, I realize that not all outlines need to be strong and emulate the classic comic book style, but many of the images I'm seeing do seem to be striving for outlines, but they're not consistent. Sometimes they track along nicely when separating different material groups, but then they breakdown where you have two identical material groups. Again, this is probably my personal aesthetic speaking. There's a lot of good work going on here, but it's just that some of it might need a little more hand editing to take it to the next level of NPR.

I can agree with mmitchell_houston about additional cleaning of images after applying the filter.

The problem for me is, that I just do not know, how to do it and after applying Topaz Clean filter,

the images looks much better to me, so I will probably keep applying this filter to my renders.
