Sudden crash after Mac OS Catalina update

My Mac OS Catalina was recently updated to 10.15.7 and files that previosly rendered OK now cause DS to crash within one or two seconds of clicking the render button. DS just vanishes from the screen with no dialog, no freeze up and no appology. Has anyone else experienced this?  I suspect the cure is to revert to Mojave.

  • Hi barrieM!

I'm using DS 4.12.0.86 with macOS Catalina 10.15.7 on a 16" MacBook Pro (Intel).  I just started a Time Machine backup on the MacBook Pro in preparation for the latest security updates to 10.15.7.  My old version of DS has been doing fine, but I don't know about how well the latest versions of DS work on Catalina.  I do know that DS 4.16.xx runs fine with Big Sur on both of my M1 Macs (M1 MacBook Air and M1 iMac.)

Once I've finished backing up my MacBook Pro and then applying the 10.15.7 security updates, I'll see if (old) DS 4.12.0.86 runs.  Just in case something has changed with the security update.  Will report back later today/tonight. :)

Perhaps someone running Catalina and DS 4.16.xx can let us know if they're having issues or not.

Thank you Lee. In the meantime I am trying to figure out how to get back to Mojave.

  • I finally completed the Time Machine backup and Catalina security updates.

Running DS 4.12.0.86 and macOS 10.15.7 (with latest security updates) and rendering works great so far.  No crashes.  I don't know what would happen if I installed 4.16.0.xx and tried.  4.12.0.86 has been quite stable for me on the MacBook Pro and I'm sticking with it for the time being. :)

Even though the MacBook Pro (Intel i9) renders more quickly than either of my M1 Macs, I've been doing most of my renders on the M1 iMac (bigger screen, fans don't get as loud/run less, etc.)

Now we need to find out if someone is running macOS 10.15.7 and DS 4.16 successfully (or not.)

I hope you get your system sorted out, barrieM!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help with this.

    Lee

Thankyou for your feedback. I appreciate your help. My iMac with 8GB RAM quickly runs out of memory so I ordered a miniMac with 32GB RAM hoping I can keep my hobby alive but I won't get it till mid Feb. In the interim I am trying to downgrade to Mojave which was a little more forgiving than Catalina.  By the way I joined DeviantArt very recently but not yet participated. I found your art very interesting with quite a WOW factor. Your Daz models are fantastic. Thanks again for your help.
