Thanks to this thread, I am now a member of DropBox. I joined because I actually have something to contribute relevant to this thread. It is a material to create a flock of birds. I made it a few months ago from a photograph I took a couple of years ago of some birds in flight. I used Paint Shop Pro to eliminate the sky, and to create a mask for the transparency of the material. To use it, simply create an elongated sphere, or even a rock, and apply the material. The size and quantity of birds can be controlled simply by using the Material Labs Transformation Tool. The bigger the birds, the less there are. When I built it, the way I used it was applied to an elongated sphere, then I used rocks as negative Booleans to cut out parts of the flock out of the edges of the sphere for a more natural chaotic flock appearance. I stashed it here:

Because I used a space in the file name, you may have to copy and paste the line above instead of clicking on the link. I'll try not to do that in the future. Sorry. :red: Go get it! :ahhh:
Um, if you don't know what to do with the file, just ask. ;-)
Thanks CTippetts for sharing this file, downloading it now
@ Mermaid : I just give a better look at your render and I think that there's a problem with the thaï boat that is not really on the beach (look at the shadow under the boat). Take care to the limit box of this object, I could be wrong but it seems to me that this is what is put on the beach.
OMG the boat is floating in the air. Thanks C-ram good timing, you caught the error before I did my final render. I adjusted the trees on the rock and I came around today to ask a question and saw this message.
The Question - If I use DOF which object should I select, the Thai rock or the boat and what will be a good radius to use.
@ Mermaid, I would select the boat with DOF set at 0.05 or .03 :) ...but that's just a suggestion, im sure what ever you chose the finished render will look very nice :)
Thanks Tim for the suggestion
Here's the boat, I think this time it's right
looks fine to me :)
To me too, this is looking good. I'll look at my Dof settings to tell you what are my parameters.
Wow. Thanks for this. Will certainly give it a try!
@Mermaid : in my scene, I've look at the DOF setting and to apply the effect, I have select my foreground vegetation. Tim is right, you can set the DOF at 0,03 to 0,05.
You can simply test it by placing two or three simple spheres in front of your camera at different distances (The boat, the rock but of course, hide those objects before).
I made a few adjustments, and I experimented a bit with the lighting. Tried to use a Dome light but obviously I didn’t know how to use it, I ended up with a darker render. After various renders with the cloudscape hidden, I settled for a TA render with these settings.
Render 36Rpp, Soft Shadows, TA, TA Shattering Correction, Boost light, Mrd 4
Sky Lab Cloud excluded, Cast Shadows off in Ibl - I used the sky C-ram shared with slight adjustments.
Global shadows 25,
Radial light Soft shadows 10 – cloud excluded.
Rendered in 15hr19mins.
The second render - used Dof with a 0.03 radius – selected the boat and the render time was 14hrs37mins.
I’m very pleased with both results. :-)
A zillion thanks to C-ram and everyone who helped and encouraged me; I learnt many valuable lessons while doing this project.
Cloudscape – Cloudscape 5
Boat – C-ram
Vegetation – Xfrog, Nobiax (Share CG) and Bryce presets

Awesome work, mermaid! I've learned a lot from this thread and I can tell you have too! Nice work!
Thanks Art, yes I did and had lots of fun along the way. :-)
@ Mermaid : nicely done! I prefer the first render with no DOF effect because in the second one depth of field is focused on the foreground and the background. Your render is good however birds are too big.
Thinking about a last element to had in my scene, I have work on a caracter. Basically it's a Vicky 4 from poser with a dress download from sharecg.
I've also work on a traditional Thaï hat with wings3d.
Here are the results :
I think that will be a really nice addition to your scene....nice work :)
Thanks C-ram for your comments. :) Vicky looks nice, I look forward to seeing your completed render.
I changed the size of the birds and re-rendered my image. Thanks C-ram :-)
Can anyone reupload initial scene ("island_for_daz_forum.br7")? Dropbox link is now 404, and c-ram seems to be busy with other software lately.
Sorry I don't have it as I worked on the shared file.
Sorry akmerlow, I haven't got it
Akmerlow : here you go :
https://filebin.net/62m5wl39sded0vmm
it stays there for 6 days.
Thanks, adbc.
Also i suggest to those, who are new and haven't seen this thread, read it from page 1 (as it's nice insight on possibe approach to building such scenes) and maybe also try take this "starting scene" and make something different with it.
Thanks Akmerlow for bring up this thread, brings back nice memories, and Adbc for sharing the file. Unfortunately we never got to see Cram completed work.
Fascinating thread! Its unlikely we will see the results of this particular project anytime soon. For anyone who wants to know, here are some links to what C-Ram is doing now in Terragen4 and speedtree. Can we say photorealistic? I think we can. Terragen4 also has an unbiased rendering kernel that is fast, accurate, and well, ideal for this type of work. I am truly inspired. I feel that Bryce is just a few updates away from competing with Terragen4, but the artist matters more than the software, and in that regard I expect only the best from C-Ram, no matter what application he employs Fun fun!

Thanks Rashad for the link. Bryce's lost is Terragen4's gain.
There is also C-Ram's gallery at ArtStation

I don't remember, if latest Bryce works by him were posted here:

I'd say Marc pushed Bryce to limits (which i find very inspiring) and now embodies even more ambitions with Terragen!
Thanks for the links, a brilliant, talented artist in every sense of the word.
Fascinating work, thanks for the link akmerlow.
akmerlow : thanks for the links. Fascinating indeed.
