Animated Tiling Textures Questions?

RexRedRexRed Posts: 1,323

Years ago in the 90s I remember using texture tiling program called "reptile".

You could make short animations of seamless tiling algorithms. Anyone still got a copy of that app?

I can't seem to find that tiny little useful app now.

This got me thinking, well, Daz makes animations and it is also a great texture generator.

Couldn't I make animations of tiling textures in Daz?

Then, I remembered asking about adding a movie (mp4) into a Daz animation (for instance on a TV screen) and I recall I needed to jump through a lot of hoops to do this.

In other words, natively it does not work. Though in post work it can be done in Premiere to some degree.

Has anyone experimented in Daz with tiling texture/shader animations? Can it be done?

Then I have been led to options like Filter Forge and Substance Designer?

Which one makes animations and what is the best option (in your opinion)?

I like Substance Designer, it seems well documented and for a small fee I can open a subscription.

Filter Forge is currently half off that is $400 (normally $800) for lifetime updates and the full studio version.

I would like to make 4k seamless tiling mp4s.

Any suggestions, tips and help on this are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I just spent $400 on Filter Forge.

Just finding out it uses CPU to render, not GPU.

I have an I9 with 12 cores - 24 threads. It is pretty fast but 30 frames a second on some filters would be SLOW.

I purchased lifetime updates, maybe GPU rendering will be added in the future.

Daz uses GPU to render textures.

I keep my CPU shut off.

Kind of a bummer Filter Forge does not use my Nvidia 3090 graphics card...

Apparently, to make animations in FF you need to build in incremental changes and batch render a series of files...

Thus this unlocks how animations could be made in Daz using maybe the Render Doctor or some script like that.

Make a plane put the texture on it and make incremental changes.

https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts/matanim does the tiling and offsets as well as other shader functions
