NVidia lray

Hi all,

I've just downloaded 4.8 and I'm loving it. However, the NVidia render engine while looking really good does have a lot of variables in it. Is there an idiots guide to the various settings in Nvidia yet?

NVidia lray for dummies...

Thanks in advance,

G

SickleYield has a useful breakdown of the surface sliders at Deviant Art which should help you wrap your head around some of the settings.

:-) I have a question about the new Iray reander engine.

I can't seem to get light to show up in my renders upon rendering, all my renders come out with this black overlay.
    What am I doing wrong?

First, use Photometric lights, Spot or Point.
Second, if you are doing an indoor scene, you need light, a lot of light. For the photometric lights, use the light settings at the bottom. And you can also turn any surface into a light using the IRay emission shader.

Crank up the Luminous Values, 100000 is not extreme in any way.

What is in your scene and, if it has environment, is it enclosed? Use the photometric lights, under the Create menu, in lieu of DS lights. You can even make a plane an emitter. You can set to Sun/Sky in the Render settings, but only if the scene is not enclosed, as I mentioned. Then you will likely need the photometric lights or mesh lights (meshes that have been made emitters with the emissive shader.

Make sure you have downloaded the Iray Beta Content (it's listed on the first page of the DS Beta Release thread. General Shaders are then in Shader Presets under Iray Uber Defaults. Under each of G2F and G2M in their materials folders, is a skin shader to apply over your figure's textures. If your DS Beta was in DIM, the Iray content will be too; place Iray in the search field of DIM.

:-) The scene is an outdoor scene, I tried using the photometric lights, but still had the dark overlay. So I finally did a test render with one of the interactive lessons, strangely the interactive lesson rendered just fine. But I am going to try some of the suggestions I got earlier out too.

I am using genesis base model for my out door scene, and I saw in syckleyields youtube on getting started in Iray that she converted a lot of her materials to Iray. I haven't figured out how to do that for all my things yet but the ones I did manage to convert to Iray uber surface still don't render. I am going to try the idea of making other surfaces in to a light and hope that makes a difference.

 My biggest problem though is that none of my lights register to the system Iray lights regular lights they just don't show up the only light that does show up is the headlamp on my camera.

For outdoor, use the Environment under Render settings.

    Thanks, I'll try that. :-)

I had the same problem, i just found a sunshine preset for iray, somewhere in smart content. I think I lost it already but it's there somewhere.

Thank you so much SickleYield!! The video tutorial is very helpful to get started with Iray.

    Hey SickleYield,

While I was watching your (very helpful) video, I was wondering why you do test renders. I have the Iray drawstyle shortcut set as 0 (zero) and the normal texture shaded preview set to 9. That way I can easily switch between the two. So I don't bother with tests - just hit 0 to see my Iray preview. Although, before any final render I do a test or two.

I know everyone has their own way of working. I was just curious (or maybe nosy - lol).

I've never found the preview mode responsive enough, and turning it on and off again takes longer than hitting ctrl r. I need to look through different cameras a lot when I'm working, and every time you change the camera view or angle, the preview mode goes "Oh wait, I have to re-render everything!" And nope. I hate that.

    Yeah, that makes sense.

We work in different ways. I tend to set the camera up first and leave it there, move things into position, then set up the lights last of all. So I usually don't need to touch the camera.

It would be boring if we all did the same thing.

    :)

I haven't been able to download 4.8 and might wait til it's official. I followed the instruction but it didn't seem to result in the right files being available for download. Anyone else have that problem on a mac?

Make sure the Download Filters in DIM's "Ready to Download" tab include "Public Build" and "Mac 64-bit".

Yes, did that as the instruction said. What appeared was something called "Public Beta Iray Support Content."
