Stonemason's Contemporary Living: Lighting Issue

Matthias MueheMatthias Muehe Posts: 39

Hi folks,

I'm trying to put Stonemason's Contemporary Living environment to work, but I face lighting issues I'm not able to solve. For testing reasons I simply loaded the complete model and applied the provided lighting set. When rendering (IRAY), the room is barely lit, almost completely dark. No matter how much I intensify the light sources, it just stays that way.

So I started to add spotlights and point lights, but these also are almost impossible to use. To display far corners of the room, for example, I placed a point light there and tried different light intensities. But even at two million lumen the area kept being pitch black.

At some point I had placed about 30 light sources at insane intensities, but the room still looked dark and awkward.

Now I'm completely out of ideas what I might do wrong, since I have no clue what might be the root of this strange behaviour.

Can somebody give me a hint?

Thanks,

Matthias

Check the Environment tab of your render settings. What is the environment mode set to? If it's, for example, Dome Only, or Sun-Sky Only, that would explain why your lights don't appear to be working.

Iray wasn't around when I made that one, can't check right now but does it have a skydome in the scene? , deleting that will help

That may well be, but I face the same issue with your City Loft Living Set and that one has an Iray subfolder. Yet, just the same: scene loaded, materials applied, environment set to 'Scene only', used one of the Render Presets. And the result is: room in the middle of a night with almost no light around. No, it's not pitch black like, there's some shadowy outlining, but additional lights again don't help.

Which other setting, tick mark or whatever do I have to set to make the render look like the ones you used in the thumbnails?

  • Have you checked the Luminance or Luminance Flux parameter? Select a light and see what value is applied the Luminance parameter. By default, Luminance is very low. Pump it up insanely!

This rubbish gets banded about all the time. Either use Tone Mapping or set  the Luminace Units to cd/cm^2.

In saying that if Stonemason added settings then they should work unless you have made other changes to your Environment settings.

I just tested 'City Loft Living' and it works fine on my end,all the render presets are working as they should.

I recommend setting Environment mode to Sun/Sky which allows the light to stream into the windows, if using the night materials with 'Scene only' then you'll need to adjust tone mapping accordingly

and also for Contemporary living, if you're using Scene Only as an environment setting then there are no light sources in the room so it will render as black, apply a glass shader to the windows and switch to sun/sky

Where in Studio is this option to switch to cd/cm^2?

In the shader under Emission. Turn emissions on and it is one of the options under Emission Units.
