I've never had this happen before…loading the basic hair for a gen2 character and it's a grey low-res form. I didn't know you could have one element be low-res when the rest looks normal. How do I turn this into hair. It ever renders low-res.
Did you apply the texture? I've had that happen with several hair models, they load with no textures or materials and look like what you described. Selecting and applying a material pose/texture for the hair always fixes it. Of course, the model will still load untextured into any new scenes unless you save a copy of it with your chosen textures applied and load that one from your library instead.
Actually most of the many hairs I have do load with a default texture applied, but I have come across some that load without a texture map as Byrdie described.

I believe all hair (without texture applied) looks that way, it's the transparency map with the textures that gives the hair it's fine strands.

That did the trick. I've never had a hair load without at least some texture before. If I ever want an alien with noodle hair I'm covered.
