Would Bryce be good for this?

Would Bryce be suitable for this...

Create a large fantasy world with mountains, rivers, streams, trees, etc.

Add roads and trails (and control where they are laid)

Add a couple of cities and a few villages.

Can Bryce do all that? And, if so, how much can we let Bryce do automatically and randomly vs placing each element, manually?

One thing that you have to remember with Bryce is that it is only a 32 bit program, so the size and complexity of your scenes are goverend by that to a great extent.

To create a world, as you are envisging could be problematic, even if you use instancing to dupilicate some parts.

Bryce won't place things automatically for you, you will need to determine the placement of your elements, as you would need to in most 3d Programs.

Ahh. For some reason, I got the impression Bryce had a "world builder" feature, where you could set some parameters and set it loose. No?

Are there other 3D world building tools that might be better suited?

    Does Bryce even exist anymore?

Any product link I find on Google leads to a 404.

Bryce can do all that (and more) but maybe not quite in the way you would want...I don't know how easy it would be to place cities and lay roads, for instance. As chohole (who knows a lot more about it than I do) said, the more complexity you add, the less feasible it becomes. The things on your top line--mountains, bodies of water, etc.--are some of the many things Bryce is great at.

Look at the promo images for Bryce 7.1 Pro - Vegetation (particularly the one labeled "Materials for distant terrains") and see if that's in line with what you want to do. If it is, you should give Bryce a try (and you might consider buying that product, as it has some good tools for that sort of thing).

If you want to quickly generate an entire world (as in planet), there's Fractal Terrains by ProFantasy Software (not sold at DAZ), but I don't think it does cities and roads. It's pretty different than Bryce...it does things that Bryce can't, and Bryce does a lot of things it can't.

Thanks, guys, for all the input. Essentially, I'm writing a story and I was thinking how cool it would be to have a tool like Bryce sort of create the scenes. Then, when writing, I could just describe what I'm looking at in Bryce. And, it would allow me to be consistent in my descriptions because wherever my characters are in my story, I'd go to that part of the world (kingdom) in Bryce and again describe what I see.

Huh, says "purchased" on the page, but I didn't see it in DIM. (I thought I had it which is what started this whole thing anyhow).

I don't know that such software exists which will automatically generate worlds so expansive and yet so detailed...though if it doesn't exist, it probably will someday...and if it does exist, I'd like to hear about it. ;-)

My primary worldbuilding tool is still the one inside my skull.

Bryce and Hexagon have to be downloaded manually from your product library. If you own content for either, but don't have the boxes checked off under the settings, DIM won't show any of it.

(As long as I'm here...has a way been done...is there a way... to import Bryce objects into Daz? I found a model of a robot made for bryce at Vanishing Point that I'd love to use in Daz).

2 ways actually. One way is to use the DS bridge from Bryce to DS, the other way is to open the object in Bryce and export an obj which can then be opened in DS.

I have to point out that normally this process is done in reverse though, set up figures and props in DS (or in my case Poser) and then use the bridge to send them into a Bryce environment

I've learned further that Bryce doesn't work on modern macs, so these options don't seem workable, as I'm guessing you need Bryce for the bridge to work.

    Yes, that is indeed true.

hmm.. If Bryce isn't too difficult to use on a basic level..I could do an install onto Parellels, put the thing i want into bryce, export as OBJ, then use it on the mac in Daz...that could work....right?
