Hou - overly reflective eyes

arne207arne207 Posts: 154

Hey there,

today I got Hou and like her face sculpt - but when getting her to look straight into the camera her eyes (any supplied color) turn super reflective, as shown in the picture. Even slightly moving the head makes the effect disappear. Is that a bug or a setting I can tweak myself?

Edit: The pics are without using a separate camera. Using a camera the effect disappears.

Eventually try to turn OFF camera's headlamp ? and lighten your scene with object emitters or other kind of lights. Problem could also be a custom morph for this Hou character that changes slightly the cornea's curvature or iris' deepness (most likely the cornea). I think the parameter : "Eyes Cornea Bulge" comes with DAZ3D basic.

    - Check that cornea's Refraction Index is 1.38. If it's more than that it could explain the excessive brightness.

    - You could make your own cornea morphs with ZBrush, Blender, etc. or get a package that enables you to change the cornea's bulge and or iris' depth. Ultimate Eyes for Genesis 8 by PhilW for example propose those kind of morphs.

    - Another simpler way would be to raise the Glossy Roughness of the cornea.

What's weird is that it feels like the iris "changes" color. So you might wanna check glossiness/reflectivity settings there too ;)

Hey there, thanks for the input!

The problem is there when I don't use a camera. With a camera it's not, headlamp or not.

    - Blender, ZBrush - no experience with that
    - Eyes Cornea Bulge - where would I find that?
    - Refraction index is at 1.38
    - Glossy Roughness is set to 0.11. Changing it does nothing
    - Glossy Reflectivity - same thing
    - Reflection Roughness is at 0, raising it turns the eyes black
    - Fiddling with other stuff under "Cornea" did not help

Hmm. The figure also has a problem with not loading the correct lashes, you have to do that yourself. Hopefully there'll be a fix.

EDIT: Tried using "Sun Sky" Environment Mode - no problem there. "Dome Only" - seems ok. "Scene Only" - there it is again, silvery eyes.

"Eyes Cornea Bulge" is (I'm pretty sure) a default DAZ morph. So go to the Parameters Tab. Next to the search icon (magnifier) type : cornea, and you should find morphs related to the cornea.

Whatever you see in this cornea's reflection IS around your character. A lamp, an object emitting light, the HDRI projected by your dome etc.

The dome could be the issue. (No use to set the environment mode to "Dome and Scene" or "Scene Only" if you don't have an environment loaded other than an hdr Environment Map)

    - Set the viewport to NVidia Iray to preview the render.

    - Then go to Render Settings > Environment > Dome > Draw Dome : On.

    - Rotate the dome : Render Settings > Environment > Dome > Dome Rotation. If the hdr you're using has something bright facing the character, then it could simply be that, something too bright in the hdr reflected on the cornea. Rotating this bright area to a side could do the trick.

I tend to use SASE Promo Lights plus Extras, for characters only renders. Gives pretty nice results even without extra lights.

    Hope this'll help :/
