Bought and un-zipped lots of content which shows but won't run

edited December 1969 in New Users

Greetings All, First Post,

I am a new user of about four months and having good success except for content I bought and un-zipped that shows up in content management, DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats but will not play. My guess is it has something to do with the file structure my stuff is contained in. Where can I find the proper fie structure for DAZ 4.7? How important are fie names like "Runtime"?

I am an author and my cover artist uses DAZ 4.7 as part of her creating suite but she's no help for obvious reasons. If not obvious, think about it.

If I knew the proper file structure, I'd arrange everything properly but it appears that the file structure is unforgiving and counter intuitive...or is it just me?

Best,
Rob

What is the exact path (e.g. C:\Users\Public\Documents\...) to one of the items?
In DS, go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, expand the "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats" sections, and post a screenshot.

If you are seeing the files but they don't do anything it often means you are looking at material settings for a model, not the model itself. Check that the items you bought don't have required items, or if they do that you have the required item, and make sure you are loading and selecting the target item (from the main folder rather than the materials folder for an item in DS format, or from the Figures library rather than the Pose or Materials library for a Poser-format item) before trying to change its settings.

If you are manually unzipping the files instead of using DIM you probably have been extracting the "Content" folder to your library, drag & drop all the files and folders inside "Content" up one level. The "Content" folder is for DIM's benefit as it separates instructional files for DIM from the actual content files and DIM will strip out the "Content" folder on install. When manually unzipping extract the files and folder inside the "Content" folder.

Folks I truly appreciate your replies but they are not answering my questions. Perhaps if I were a bit more direct.

    1) I have material from DAZ, Renderosity and Runtime. What is the proper structure for everything after "My DAZ 3D Library/..."

    2) I notice directories scattered all over the hard drive, DAZ 3D, Runtime, etc. Were they put there by DAZ 4.7 on installation. I did not put them there but the new WinZip seems to have a will of its own. can everything, except for the .exe and .dll apps, be under the My DAZ 3D Library folder?

    3) I am frustrated by some of the content that requires going through up to 5 folder levels to get to the nut. Is it Kosher to move stuff up for easier access?

    4) It appears that some of the software recognition of content is name based. Many of the app names are ego driven weird. Is it ok to rename content to make it more sensible.

You can address these questions by number or any way that suits you. I'm just very frustrated right now and I'm sitting on a couple of hundred bucks worth of people, weapons, hair and clothing that I cannot access. EeeeK.

    Thanks,
    Rob

All of the stuff that you have bought from DAZ 3D can be installed using the DIM (DAZ Install Manager), content from other stores needs to be unzipped, and placed into My DAZ 3D Library by you. If you are not sure what to do, my advice would be to unzip to a temporary folder on your Desktop, look at the folder names, and merge them with the same ones in My DAZ 3D Library.

The DAZ Studio program, and it's support files like plugins (DLL) etc, are installed to Program Files, and you should install the latest version of DS using DIM, that will guarantee that it will be installed to the correct place. The program (DAZ Studio) and it's content are two completely different things. You should NOT install any content into Program Files

It is not a good idea to rename content or folders unless you know exactly what you are doing, and what the folders contain.

There are two folders inside My DAZ 3D Library that you should not interfere with at all, 'Runtime' and 'data'

Runtime holds all of the Poser file format content that is installed to your library, and 'data' is an important folder for DAZ Studio content, saved scenes will not be able to open if anything in there is moved.

Addict, Now we are cookin' man. Many thanks. I man have screwed it up already by doing exactly what you said not to do, i.e. messing with Runtime. I may decide to delete the whole mess and start over downloading and installing everything and let DIM decide what should be where.
    THANKS!

The two important folders are Runtime and Data -- these need to be exactly one level below the content folder, e.g. My DAZ 3D Library\Data and My DAZ 3D Library\Runtime.
