Can I "modernize" an older hair?

I love using an older hairstyle from Rendo (Punky Short Hair for Gen 3 and 8) but it looks kinda dated and not detailed. The resolution is just not up to modern standards.

I tried increasing the SubD and tried several more modern shaders but the results were not entirely satisfying. Is there anything else I could try?

It's a hair made for genesis 8, not sure how outdated that is, LOL. If subD and new shaders don't do it for you, I can't think of anything else you could try, sorry.

Both subd and new shaders didn't do it.  It is the way Propschick modeled the hair.

A few things you can do are:

    1. Replace the textures with more photoreal hair textures (there are many purchasable and free hair merchant resources)
    2. Create your own normal maps for the hair
    3. Refine the cutout opacity masks
    4. Use a product like https://www.daz3d.com/backlight--hair-shaders-for-iray-
