Which Michael to get

Next month I plan on purchasing one of the Michael Pro bundles, but I am torn over whether to get the 5 or the 6. The five seems to have WAY more things, and the pro bundle seems to come with a lot more coll items and things that will apply to other genesis models.

What are some pros and cons between the two iterations of Michael? What should I be considering?

Hmmm... 6 is the most recent? lol, there's nothing wrong with Mike 5 either though, and Genesis can morph from female to male and back again so in some ways more versatile.

M6 is still getting lots of clothing released by vendors whereas not so much for the genesis m5/v5 figures any longer, but on the other hand there's a huge catalog for them already, and since M5 can also wear M4's clothes too...

One possible thing to consider is Carrara 8.5 pro. While that may seem out of left field for this discussion, it's at extreme sale right now and I believe it still comes with the M5 and V5 pro bundles included. Oh and plus it's also a heavy duty app that can do almost anything, so even if right now you're not interested in modeling or creating plants and environments and skies and animation and dynamic hair and cloth, it's a pretty awesome tool to have at your disposal if you need it, and you might at some point want some of those features too. And it's currently only $65 for the pro version, as long as your a PC member. So thought I would throw that out there as well.

On the other hand, if you want the absolute latest and won't settle for anything else, you may want the M6 pro bundle instead. Some folks swear by this latest generation, that it bends better or what have you, but they seem pretty close to the same (both look great in bends) to me.

Yeah, just had a moment of self doubt about whether I was remembering correctly and looked it back up:

    http://www.daz3d.com/carrara-8-5-pro

looks like it still has both the M5 and V5 pro bundles included. And since the M5 pro bundle by itself is
$87.47, seems like a no brainer to go for Carrara 8.5 pro and get same content and much more for less money anyway. That is if you decide to go for M5 and M6 (nothing stops you from also getting and using M6 later though).

Carrara is not something I'm ready to jump into yet. Plus I need to get one of the Pro bundles to get the genitalia, as that is something I need for my renders. My understanding is the pro bundles are the only place to find those.

How well do M5/4 clothing fit onto the 6?

Just to be clear, the genitalia are also included in the pro bundles for both V5/M5 that are included in Carrara. Basically even if you are afraid Carrara might give you cooties, you could still pick up both pro bundles for less then what the M5 bundle costs alone with the purchase of Carrara pro.

And like I said, sooner or later you're very likely to feel constrained by the limits of Studio (assuming that's what you're using now) and will want to be able to do more, and at that point Carrara can come in very handy.

Or at least, when I upgraded to the Carrara 8.5 pro, I got the genitals for both M5/V5. I don't know any reason that would have changed. :)

Edit: just checked, and it's listed as part of the included content:

    •Genesis Content ◦Victoria 5 Pro Bundle
    ◦Michael 5 Pro Bundle

So same thing, just more of it for a smaller pricetag.

Unless the OP is a PC member he won't get the price you see in the store for Carrara.

Yeah, I'm not so it's not that cheap for me. I don't quite have that much money to be throwing at all of this quite yet.

Well I get this can be expensive hobby (boy howdy do I know that after low these many years of playing around with this stuff :) ), but mathematically:

Michael 5 pro bundle = $124.95, with PC it's showing for me as discounted to $87.47

Carrara 8.5 pro = $285.00, with PC it's showing as discounted to $65.00

PC club cost = $24 for 3 months.

So wouldn't it still be less expensive to get it as Carrara + PC club = $89.00? Even if I'm wrong and the current discount of M5pro bundle is not just for PC members, it would still be less than $1.50 more to get Carrara, which includes M5 and V5 pro bundles (excluding all that Carrara itself can do). If someone was thinking of buying the M5 pro bundle anyway, I'd feel like a bad person if I didn't point out the Carrara pro option which includes much more for the same or lesser price.

Actually the more I look at that, I'm amazed everyone isn't snapping up Carrara right now for the Genesis content alone, that price is kind of insane currently...

I snapped it up. Just started in December with Daz and joined PC Club in January. Once joined I received a great offer for basic Victoria and Michael 6 figures (Like $12 with no extra content). I purchased and then later found the Carrera bundle and downloaded. Haven't yet attempted Carrera as I'm nowhere near ready but most of content is now in my Daz library and very useful. It was a no brainer deal.

To answer the original question here, so we don't veer too far off topic on Carrara, the two differ largely on the figure they're designed for.

Michael 5 is Genesis. An androgynous figure who can become both male and female, with built in youth morphs. As a standalone, M5 is pretty good, comes with some great skins and can use the entire Genesis wardrobe... yes, even the dresses.

Michael 6 is Genesis 2. An exclusively male figure... unless you convert morphs. Comes in regular and HD flavours, the latter of which adding a great level of fine detail which is great for close ups. Note that as far as I am aware, the HD morphs do NOT extend to the genitals geograft. That said, there's a wealth of content available for M6 now.

In my experience, M5 actually has fewer clothing options than M6. Sure, if you want to count the female dominated Genesis market you could argue otherwise, but unless your man likes crossdressing much of it is unsuited. Michael 6, being strictly male only, has a lot more options and better still less of them involving skimpy barbarian gear.

Another benefit to M6 is that because it's on Genesis 2, any older Genesis gear can be autofit to him out of the box. To do so in reverse requires an additional purchase.

Did you get Carrara Pro for $65 as a general purchase or as an upgrade? In other words, was the deep discount you received because you owned a previous version?

As mentioned in my post here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/52587/#763240 the price is only valid for PC members.

Gotcha. What I meant to say was, if I join PC club, will I get Carrara Pro for $65, or do I have to already own a previous version?

At the moment it does appear to be a good time to buy

HD has can be used on this gens and clothing as well. Several products including a few of mine have HD options.

No prior version needed. This price is currently insane, imo, and if I didn't have it already I would beg/borrow/steal to get it. It's like stumbling across a site that's selling C4D for a hundred bucks. Actually feature wise Carrara is superior in some ways, since it works natively with Daz and Poser content. And on top of that the V5 and M5 pro bundles included, so even if I bought Carrara with the express purpose of never even opening or using it, the pro bundles for V5 and M5 are a huge value enough to have it.

I know, right? It just makes good logical sense, and if nothing else gives you a big bunch of genesis content to work with at a very low price right out of the gate. (btw as an aside Carrara is pretty easy to work with, no need to feel intimidated by it, and the Carrara forum here is always filled with folks willing to help and answer questions, but I haven't been mentioning this deal to proselytize Carrara at all, just to point out this is an inexpensive way to get a lot of genesis content, including the M5pro bundle that was mentioned).

I'm not necessarily intimidated by it just not ready to dive in yet. I figure I'll dabble for a bit on daz and see what I can create then start a new chapter with Carrera. The content amount with the Carrera program is insane although it's a little lost now that I've been adding to it almost daily. It is an addictive hobby!

You won't see any separate toast morphs around here, any that exist are part of character packs. Plenty of extras for both M5 and M6 toast over at Renderotica, if you don't mind visiting an adult art site. I bought a few nice ones just last week. But they don't seem to be HD, now that I think of it.

Oh, and if it's for M5, check out the freebies over there should you visit. There's a pack called the "Wicked 100" that will give you plenty of options for the Genesis/M5 equipment. Almost as good as the pay-for packs around and is a great addition in any case. There may be some samplers for M6 genitals too.
