How should my Content Library be set up?

I have a separate drive for all of my DAZ content but it is a mess.

I really want to tidy it up but I haven't found any solid advice on what order the file directory should be.

This is what I have:

Main Folder: DAZ3D

Inside - lots of folders including Content, data, People, Poses, Props, Runtime (1) My Files and Studio

In Studio:

DAZ Studio Tutorials

Documentation

My Library

Render Settings

In My Library:

A whole lot of folders including data, People, Poses, Props and Runtime (2)

In Runtime (2) – Poser content directory

---------------------

Question 1: Which folder should my DAZ content go in?

- DAZ3D?

- Studio?

- My Library?

Question 2: Should I have two Runtime folders? If One, where should it go?

Yes, I know this may mess up the directory system etc. etc. I have dealt with that before.

I just want to know the right way so I can fix it now and in case of future mess -ups

Nom the Runtime folders don't have numbers after them that's just to point out that there are two.

Thanks for your help.

  • The name and location of the content directory don't matter, but you should nto have one inside another as you do here. The Data, Runtime, and the various user-facing content folders (People, Props, etc.) should all be in the root of the cotnent directory, not in a sub-folder, so those additiona Content and My Library folders are not wanted if the Daz 3D folder is the oen set as a content directory.

I do not really understand your problem with daz libraries. The name and location of the folders is meaningless, you can choose it freely and it will have no impact on performances or whatever. I have 0 daz assets in the default DS library, all my assets are located in another disk. The only issue is wether to have one or several dirs. It is probably easier to browse the content library when you only have a unique library location, but there are also good reasons to have several locations (using several disks, isolating character morphs, etc).

Concerning the poser folders, there is no reason to have them in the same location as daz assets. I really prefer to isolate them and to have the poser items in differents dirs than daz stuff. Finding stuff in poser directories is such painful that I organize my items by type and I have separate poser runtime directories for clothing, environments, props and so on. I even subdivided some of them and I have 10 or 12 directories containing poser runtimes presently. I find it convenient to have them under a common directory called poser, but is does not matter. Again no performance impact, just a way to make it easier to find what I am searching. I even have a poser runtime to experiment. When I have a new poser asset I install it in a "new" runtime directory, I try it and If I find the item usable and useful I copy the runtime to the appropriate location. In either case, I suppress the directory. And of course, I install manually all poser assets.
