not using gpu while rendering

i tried to render bererfoot dancer(my first render).

while rendering, taskmanager showed 100% cpu utilazation while nvidia gpu was at 0%. however vram of nvidia gpu was used. also ram of my computer went up by about 3-4 gb when started rendering.

Scince this was my first time, i dont know if gpu utilization should be normaly at 0% or there is a problem.

My rig is,

MSI GF63 10UC

I5-10500H

Nvidia RTX 3050 (40W i think)

  • The 3050 has only 4GB of its own memory, so it could well run out and drop to CPU on many scenes. Reducing texture sizes may help, depending on just how busy the scene is.

i thought that low vram might be the case. so i rendered only a genesis 8 character with no environment. only the character with a texture applied. that time also the rendering was done by cpu. not gpu.

Depending on the size of the textures and SubD of the character, that may have been too much already for a 4GB card

  • Thanks for replies.

i was able to find my problem. scence was correctly rendering. task manager only shows gpu utilization at 0%. cuda graph of gpu goes at 100%. since both gpu and cpu were checked in render settings cpu utilization was at 100%. thats why i thought only cpu was used for rendering.

  • Sorry, I should have asked if the render was set to use the CPU too. It is worth trying without the CPU enabled as, on some systems, it can actually be faster to leave the CPU to managing the GPU rather than rendering in its own right too.
