Parenting (or childing) one object to another

I recently bought Trismegistus' "Treasury of Books" and have the books arranged on the shelves as I want them. Now I need to move the bookcase but when I do the books stay behind, hanging in space. How can I "pin" them to the shelves so everything moves as a unit? I see references to "parenting" one object to another, but nowhere just how to do it. Can someone lead me through this, step by step?

Same question for primitives, since I've made a few extra books from "cube" and have them mixed in with the rest.

Thanks!

The simplest way would be to select all of the books in the Scene pane then drag them onto the bookcase - if it's a prop just the bookcase, if it's a figure you may want to make sure you parent them to the bookcase bone as otherwise if you move using that the books will be left behind.

No, I've arranged them on the bookcase already. Now, how do I anchor them there? Step by step please, I'm new to this!

Is the bookcase a prop or a figure, i.e. does it have bones, or is it just geometry. If you don't know, where did you get it and can you give a link.

It is most likely to be a prop, so follow Richard's advice here :

The simplest way would be to select all of the books in the Scene pane then drag them onto the bookcase

Once you have dragged and dropped all of the boke items onto the Bookcase prop, they will all move together when you select the bookcase. In the Scene pane, select all the books one by one holding down the Ctrl key, then drag and drop them onto the Bookcase, they will then be parented to the Bookcase

    Edit:

If you are still not sure how to do this, pleas go to Help > User Guide page 24

You are confusing the Scene pane with the Viewport. I'm not suggesting doing anything to break the arrangement in the viewport, just moving the items in the list in the Scene pane. If doing what I suggest breaks the layout undo and in the Scene pane option menu (the lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab) click parent Items in Place so that it becomes checked.

    Thanks! Worked like a charm!!!!!

I'm not clear, though, on one thing:

    > select all the books one by one holding down the Ctrl key, then drag and drop them onto the Bookcase,

What does the Ctrl key do? It seems to work the same whether the Ctrl key is pressed or not. Except, if I press and hold Ctrl and THEN click and drag the title, it makes just an outline around the item name in the Scene pane but doesn't move it. What's up with that?

Ctrl-click adds the item to the selection, so you can select multiple items.
