Weight mapping - can't give any weight under 100%

Hi guys!

So I'm sure I'm missing something, but as far as I can tell I'm following all the steps in the rigging tutorial on the Daz Studio YouTube channel.

I'm trying to rig a door. I want to make the door open, just the door, not the frame. So I import a door .obj into Daz and convert it into a figure, which I assume you have to do to rig it since I couldn't do anything until I did that. I call the root bone Frame and assign it to the frame selection group (the obj has three groups: frame, door, and handle). I leave that alone.

I create a child bone, called Door, and assign it to the Door selection group (I know that this is only to let the users directly select the bones and has no bearing on the weights). I add a Y rotation map. Now I right-click, Geometry Selection > Select by Face Group > Door. So now I have all the door polys selected. I right-click again, Weight Editing (or whatever it is) > Fill Selected... and I select 100%. Only now, the whole thing turns red, not just the selection.

So I try again. I start over, only this time I select all first and assign a weight of 0%. Instead of turning blue, it turns red. I can't seem to apply gradients, either. I also tried Select by Face Group > Frame, and then Fill Selected with 0% and nothing happened.

Yesterday I managed to do this and make the door work, and then today it stopped working and now this is happening. I have no idea what's going on.

Help?

    Hi!

Did you assign another weight group and map to the other part of the door? If any part of it has weight maps, all of it needs to, so you will need to fill both parts with something. At least I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Make sure that only the polygons you want are selected. If you look in the Tool Settings pane with the Geometry Edit tool active the Door should have a greyed out + and a a solid - while the others should have greyed out - and solid + next to them.

Thanks for the replies. I did initially try weight mapping everything. I had three bones, one for each part of the door. My problem is I could set the door to 100%, but I could not set the door frame polygons to 0% and vice versa for the other bones.

Richard, yes, I was making sure in the Geometry Edit tool but I'll check again. That's what's so weird about this. I'm pretty sure I was doing everything right but obviously I'm missing something. I just can't figure out what.

To add to the weirdness, I reloaded the file this morning (I hadn't saved last night after my disasterous rigging attempt) and now the door works again. It doesn't move when I adjust the posing modifiers, but it snaps into the new pose. This was the behavior it exhibited last time it worked.

I'll revisit this thread when I need to rig a new door or rerig this one.
