Newbie confused about morph packs
I'm new to 3D. I own nothing except free stuff. Can someone explain morph packs to me? I've Googled, I've searched the docs, I've searched the forums...I've found no explanation of them, but I'm piecing together an understanding. Have I missed some awesome newbie's Glossary or concepts guide somewhere?
If I install a morph pack, it sounds like I get new morph targets/dials on some of the figure's parts (shoulder, thigh, etc)? Is that right? I don't get new "parts" on my figure, do I? But there is no left/right buttock on the model, so how do butt control morphs work?
I gather some morphs have an interface (dial?) and they're manually controlled. I gather that others have no interface and fire automatically (like Joint Controlled Morphs).
So what happens if I own 20 morph packs and some of them overlap, they both want to offer control of the same part, like the thigh?
For the automatic ones, I gather the combination could cause some weirdness, so you need to adjust the strength on them so they aren't collectively overdoing things.
What about the manual ones? Does it just mean that when I select Thigh, I'll see a ton of possible dials I could use, from all the different morph packs that want to offer thigh control? Does that get overwhelming? Do people deactivate or deinstall morph packs to reduce interface clutter?
So, tell me what I got wrong, and tell me what I completely omitted because I just don't know.

It will be helpful if you tell us:
1. What figures do you plan to use?
2. What program you plan to use them in DS or Poser (and which versions)?
3. What morph packs have you purchased?
Well, while I am considering both Daz and Poser 10 (I have it), since I'm in a Daz forum, I figured to ask here only in reference to Daz. I didn't figure morph packs behaved that differently in either program, but what do I know :P
1. For this thread, let's say some Genesis 2 figure, not sure which one. At least 1 man and 1 woman. I am leaning right now more towards that than, say, Dawn/Dusk for Poser or Daz.
2. DS 4.7.0.12 64-bit Macintosh
3. None, I only own free stuff right now. If I actually owned any packs, I'd know how they worked :P The kinds of packs I am considering first are ones like:

Basically, I prefer to let DIM install my packages as I find everything correctly then.
So let's say G2F for this example.
With the G2F figure selected in your scene tab, you will normally find dials for the morphs in one of two places, sometimes both, depending on how the vendor set up the package.
http://prntscr.com/5yfzh5 Shapeshifter morphs.
http://prntscr.com/5yfzl7 DAZ's G2F morphs.
If the vendor set up with files to load the morphs, you will also find them in the content tab, such as with my head/body morph pack, It Takes Character:
http://prntscr.com/5yg17o
As you can see, I've placed my files in G2F>Shaping. They apply each body and head at 100% and there is a file to remove the loaded morph for body and head. In addition, in the parameters (as well as shaping) tabs, the dials are available in case you want to mix and match with my or other morphs (at small percentages) to create your own unique looks.
Most morphs can be mixed and matched among the morph packs for a figure though some will be more successful than others depending on the strength of the dial you spin or the nature of the morph itself.
At ShareCG.com there is a free morph set called "DieTrying's 182 V4 Morphs." The original set was created for Victoria 4, and SickleYield (who is a vendor here) has, with permission, created versions of these morphs for Genesis, Genesis 2 Female, and Genesis 2 Male, all available at ShareCG. If you just want to see how a morph set works, I'd recommend giving that one a try.
In terms of morph sets for sale, the "basic" set that you'll probably want to start with is: https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-2-female-morphs-bundle for G2F and https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-2-male-s-morphs-bundle for G2M.
I have a chart listing many of the popular morph sets, sorted by figure and by function: The Morph Matrix. It's not complete; a lot of morph sets aren't missing either because they don't fit into one of the categories, or because the categories were getting too crowded. But it should serve as a decent starting point.
