The Library Iray Addon lighting Issue?

In the past I have used JT's excelent The Library but have onle recently got around to trying the Iray Addon.

Unfortunatly the only lights I can find are for 3Delight and dont seemn to function with Iray.

Just in case I uninstalled, re-downloaded & re-installed but no luck and yes its the Iray full setup both with and without the 3Delight lights added.

As plenty of people are using this product by the images I have seen I'm assuming that I've done something stupid again.

Q: are the lights in the 3Delight folder supposed to work with the Iray version or does Iray come without lights and you have to light it yourself?

Under Utilities are scripts for selecting lights so I assume that selects them and you turn Emission on under the Surface Tab.

Well I've selected the supplied light & checked settings under the Render, Surfaces & Lights tabs without luck.

I then deleted the light & created a couple of my own, no luck, bumped the lumins up eventualy to a million plus and no change.

I have purchased during the many sales some iray & lighting utilities  so I'll investigate & report what I find.

Any further suggestions are always welcome;)

I just loaded it in and all the lights are there and on. I changed the Tone Mapping to 60/4.0/200 and this is the result.

After screaming at the render settings for not putting Tone Mapping setting in by default and racking my brain as to what they had changed and then remembering to create new nodes & swaping between iray & filament to get it to apear and then setting the settings as you have so kindly recommended.

    It worked, so easy.

    Thanks;)

As my old boss would say: I havnt yet met a computer I didnt hate!

Hmm removed the lights and it renders exactly the same, the lights dont seem to do anything for Iray.

What do you mean 'removed the lights'? If you remove the lights then all the light props will go to or do you mean you set the Emission setting to black to stop them emitting light?

I loaded the 3Delight lights for the library rendered an image then deleted those lights and no difference to the second render.

I have the default light to switch off if any lights are loaded so I am assuming it shouldnt be on with the Library lights.

    I hope that made sense.

The 3Delight lights don't work in Iray so they wouldn't make a difference. The Iray addon loads all the bulbs in the light props as Emissive surfaces which gives the light. To switch them off you need to select them using the scripts, open the surface tab and go to the Emission settings.

I suspected that, what I couldnt understand is why lights I created ddint work.

Did you make sure Photometrics was on for each light?

  • FishtalesFishtales Posts: 6,119

Are you loading the original Library and then the Addon? All I did was click and load the Addon without the original.

If you mean render emiter yes

No. When you load a light, selct the Light Tab, select the light you added does it have Photometrics turned on?

  • MouserMouser Posts: 675

There is no on or off option for the settings under the light tab for the light I created.

Under Photometrics are these 3 options:

    Lumen

    Temperature

    Light Profile

At the top of the lights chain is the setting Illumination which is On?

  • FishtalesFishtales Posts: 6,119

So Photometrics are on. You should be getting light then.

Can you Attach the scene file as I have the Library and can see then what is going on better?

Well it was late here in Australia so I turned in, got up saw your request.

So I rendered with the Iray Pre_All but no lights and rendered dark as expected.

Added a point light with lumens set to 1000000.00 exactly as before same location in the room...

and of course now it works, why it didnt yesterday? no idea DS just felt like it.

In the end it has felt like working to day and may change its mind tomorow.

Still your Tone Mapping suggestion certainly works and thank you for the advise;)

If you are happy with the render then that is all that matters.

  • MouserMouser Posts: 675

No not happy with it, yet;)

Is it something like this? The only lighting is the ceiling lights using Emissive settings.

I'm probably going to go back to your settings as the render times with multiple lights are a killer.

By itself the library is okay and when I render m8 by himself its fine as well.

But when I combine them its taking too many samples & thus too much time which ends in a Cuda error.

If my renders take too long I get (known driver issue) a Cuda error & Iray barfs and I have to restart DS.

But the tonemapping alone is way faster so I'm going with that;)

I should have expanded on that, this is going to be an animation.

When I got my twin Zeon system years ago Iray was new & unstable and my 1060 gpu was an after thought.

I thought I was future proofing myself with plenty of CPU, DOH!

When this lockdown ends I'm getting more vram.

If doing an animation then cut down your samples. I get away with them at 100 sometimes but do some test renders at different low samples, say start at 50 and work up, until you get a render that is clear. When rendered and combined into an animation you wont really see the difference.

These were done at varying samples.

I'm rendering the character & the environment seperatly, it cuts the render time considerably.

Doesn't always work out though. In the Warg animation I tried that but the figures were running across the waving grass and not through it. I imagine it will be the same trying to get figures to walk behing tables or chairs and the lighting on the figures will be problematic for an indoor scene.

Yeah not all scenes can be so easily seperated but fortunatly most of the current scenes I'm doing can and the others have fewer objects to render.

    Swings & roundabouts;)
