Inks Tattoos and 8.1

I have been shopping around for some tattoos and inks. However, seems like majority of available products in that category are 8 only. Very few 8.1 options. I found exactly one, as of now. I am slowly beginning to understand the 8 -> 8.1 compatability of products. Most of them work excepts things on the face, I believe.

So, just wish to confirm if all those 8.0 tattoos would work on 8.1? Except for the face inks and face tattoos, I assume.

Also, a general curiosity. Why are there so little tattos for 8.1? did the vendors stop vending inks for 8.1? Or, 8.0 works for 8.1 (I assume), and they simply havent updated their store descriptions?

The tattoos for 8.0 don't necessarily work on the body/head of 8.1 in the way that you expect. Because Studio understands that 8.1 body/head = 8.0 Torso, it will frequently duplicate tattoos on both surfaces. Then what happens is that it depends on the placement of the tattoo whether or not the duplicate can be seen. For example, I've seen big back tattoos do one of two things: either they split, so that the bulk of a large tattoo is on the back, and part of it is on the head, or if it's small enough, it will appear in both places. Chest tattoos, depending on size and placement, may do the same thing, so you could wind up with a tattoo on the chest and have a split/duplicate that appears on the face. So they do work, just not necessarily the way you expect them to. I have a swimsuit image in my dA gallery that shows what can happen.

Well, 8.1 is only a few months old. Also, tattoos made for the arms and legs do still work exactly as expected, so depending on the individual resource, they may simply not need to make 8.1 specifc sets for that.

I saw your linked post. I think I get what you are saying. After reading what you said, I am going to stay away from 8.0 only tattoos and stick to the 8.1 items. I suppose, eventually, the vendors will start vending 8.1 inks and tattoos. Or, I could just add them on photoshop till more options become available.

Thank you so much helping me with your input. You have saved me a lot of trouble.

  • Whether the specific tattoo set works as intended on a character depends on different factors. Mostly how the tattoo is applied and which UV Set your Genesis 8.1 figure is using. But also the used shaders on your character may play a role.

This is one example: Inked Vol.18: Trash Polka for Genesis 8 Female(s) The tattoos are LIE settings (Layered Image Editor settings)

    • Character: Sia HD for Genesis 8.1 Female
      • All tattoos work perfectly well on Sia!
      • The Sia character uses Iray Uber as skin shader and the UV maps are Base Female which in this case means Genesis 8 Base Female. When applying the LIE settings in DAZ Studio > 4.15 the settings for the Torso surface are automatically applied to the Body surface of Sia. The UV maps for the Head surface contain the same images as for the Body.
    • Character: Erin HD for Genesis 8.1 Female
      • Only the tattoos not involving the neck work out of the box
      • The tattoos around the neck all have problems
      • The Erin character uses Base 8.1 Female UV maps

For Erin and the failing tattoos of the neck region you would have to use a process similar to the one I described in this post. You could manually load the involved LIE image maps and convert them to the 8.1 UV sets. Then afterwards apply them manually using the LIE image editor of the Head surface.

Thank you for the detailed responses. I have only recently started using Daz. I am mostly doing it as a hobby and to cope with pandemic inspired depression. As a replacement for my traveling and photography hobby. I am tech guy (programmer since I was a teenager) so I can probably do all the advise advanced steps. However, thanks to depression, I am just not the same guy I was two years ago. Right now, I want to 'select and apply' :) He he :P

I wish to have as less problems as possible in my life right now. So, I have made a note of your advice, but I think, I will continue to stick with 'ready to use' 8.1 items only. I understand that there is a hassle free refund policy as well if things dont work. However, my mind is so fragile, the thought of going through refund seems like a lot of heavy duty work right now.

Meanwhile, I have added your added your suggestions to my work diary. Some day in the future, when I feel mentally strong, I will look into these possibilities. Thank you.
