I'm looking for a headband that is a stanalone prop or can be seperated from the hair it comes with.

There are different styles of headbands, you might want to specify the type you want and maybe include an image for us to see and prevent confusion.
If you search for headband in the store, you will find some hairs with headband.
Some at least has the headband as it's own prop, e.g. https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-athena-hair-for-genesis-8-females
Is that what you are looking for?
This one is a different style and the headband is a separate prop

I created one it's for free at deviantart https://www.deviantart.com/hemi-426/art/Freebie-Hemi426-Christmas-Antlers-G3F-G8F-863948747
I think you could make the ears and antlers invisible in surface settings.
Denki Hair has a separate headband too.

Looking for a headband like this:
This could work:

the headband doesnt come off of the hair
You could use a torus primitive, stretch it along the Y axis, scale and align it to the head of an unposed figure, export to obj and re-import, use the transfer utility to make it a wearable.
No, but what you CAN do is set all the hair surfaces to 0% opacity and then you'll just have a band (personally I'd pull all the maps out of the hair too, just so they're not loaded into the scene). You might be able to get away with simply turning off each piece of the hair entirely, and have the headband left. I'm not sure how the bones are done up on that one, and I'm not at home right now to check, unfortunately.
I am consistently surprised how few hairstyles there are with hairbands and matching hair accessories. There are certainly some out there, but it seems like a great way for content creators to differentiate their hair offerings/products in a fairly simple way, and if you look at good preview images from content creators themselves, you often see things like wreaths and hairbands used, as it both can make for a more interesting and distinct image, but also it can be a good way to control the hair in dynamic poses without as much work. Hats are another example. The content creators EmmaAndJordie who have left Daz3d were really great at creating hair with interesting accessories, but the left the platform, and they only had a few things. Arki does some interesting hair like this, but that is often far out fantasy stuff not great for contemporary scenes. OutOfTouch does some occassionally. Hair accessories are also a great way to corral hair up to make posing easier. Lot of good early 3D work had ponytails for that reason. Tomb Raider is a great example, as it's easier to move that ponytail around that long flowing hair. If you want to mess around with dForce, there are plenty of hair options for that, but sometimes you want to just get an image done quickly.
You can make a hairstyle that is otherwise fairly undifferentiated from many others, and have an optional hairband that actually fits in with the hair and doesn't have poke through, and you have a product that is new and and different. As people have noted, actually getting a hairband to fit with an unmatched hairstyle can be a huge pain, with hiding mesh, trying meshgrabber or dformers, and various other steps. I have not had much success using dForce hair either, to have a large band shrink down and compress hair.
As an aside, another thing that I think is very weird is when content creators texture the hair ties to look like the hair itself. That looks so strange, and it is technically easier to just make something have a simple color texture, even just a shiny plastic torus primitive or something looks more normal than ponytails or other hair shapes held in place by a loop of hair.
Here are a few that I own.
This has a separate headband: https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-summer-sports-hair-for-genesis-8-and-81-females
This is for G3F and has flowers, but I found you can get rid of them easily: https://www.daz3d.com/girly-locks-hair-for-genesis-3-female-s
This is on the forehead, so it may not work for you: https://www.daz3d.com/foya-tight-curls-and-dforce-headband-for-genesis-8-and-81-females
And as was said above, the hair in many cases can be eliminated by turning the bits off.
