    Here's one from the RRRR challenge:

    Title: Who Doesn't Love A Beach Party?
    What could go wrong?  Everybody likes the beach.  Everybody likes food.  Alas, Jaime forgot that seagulls also like food on the beach.

    Thanks.  Will try not to interrupt too much or be too long.  Probably just something in render settings.  IN DS 4.12, it doesn't seem to like "Shadow Type Raytraced"   (On the render side, I just used 'default' with Progressive enabled and Gamma enabled at 2.2)  Took too long at 15 minutes, so cancel.  Didn't want to do hair & eyes.

    "3Delight message #45 (Severity 1): S2072: the shader 'C:/Program Files/DAZ 3D/DAZStudio4-V4_12/shaders/omnifreaker/displacement/omDispStandard2.sdl' uses a different interface version. Automatic conversion was successful. It should be recompiled for better performance."

    Deep Shadow Map (don't remember that one)  takes a while and gets the following error but at least renders.  AoA's "Metalized Glass Shaders" don't cast colored shadow as expected.  Settings for water in the glass could be better. For that matter the base board looks strange.  0_o

    Will look at the links on your sig.  : )z

    PS: Was it "Mustakettu" who had a script to convert mdl to rdl?  Script out there --> iray to 3DL?

    Yup I have the free script, for some reason it puts the diffuse map into reflection color, which is of no use whatsoever + you can't use raytraced reflection with a colormap in there...and I don't recall it converting roughness values to glossiness either, so might aswell just apply whatever RSL shader you prefer;)

    @Tynkere

    I'm using DS 4.20 and just today used a ds standard spotlight with raytraced shadows. What was trace depth set to in rendersettings? For raytracing to work you need min1 tracedepth, 2 should be more than enough, unless you really want reflective bounces between those glass surfaces to multiply.

    Regarding the AoA shaders...haven't used them for a looong time but they should work AFAIK, can do a test later...zzdevil

    Did you use any GI light? If you use no bouncelight and have no ambient light in the scene, the dark areas will take longer to calculate. You could try adding the UberEnvironment2 in ambient mode (no tracing) at a very low intensity, could help with rendertimes.

    Hair...complex hair and standard spotlights with a high shadowsamples value is a bad combination, really. Two thoughts: Use AoA spotlights with transmapped stuff flagged for alternative samples, and use OmUberSurface with occlusion disabled. Worst case scenario: Use two copies of the hair, one without opacitymaps but with "Fantom" enabled, so it does not show in render but still casts shadows. For the other copy, turn off shadows.

    Check the offending opacity maps in an image editor. If they are properly done there should be only black and white values. If not (probably not), fix them:)

    Oh, and while I'm at it...if you use a standard spot, set falloff to 2 for correct physical behaviour, and set light intensityscale to 1000000 or along those lines;) When you have enough light, use the regular intensity slider to fine tune!

    @Tynkere

    Applied the AoA crownglass teal to the sphere, created a ds standard spotlight with raytraced shadows, seems to work as expected in DS 4.20...

    ...and Carnival tealgold

    image

    Trace depth 1 is enough to get the colored shadows, however, if you also make the groundplane reflective, you'll need atleast 2 for the reflections to show:image

    And no, forget deep shadow maps, they are not raytraced so the shadow will always just be black, and they render much slower for that matter;)

    Thanks both of you about scripts.

    ----

    Glad to know to avoid deep shadow and concentrate on why raytrace gums up.  Must have color glass shadows!  ; )

    For some reason -- maybe it's 4.21-- I thought Awe-surface and Uber had been 'simplified' -- no pulldown menu for textures.

    Thanks for tips on what I should look for & how to improve.  Will play with it in DS 4.20 tonight.

    ----

    @Everyone

    Everyone's renders very well done. I have a lot re-learn, then learn even more.

    Apologies if this was intrusive tho.  "Show us your renders" topic not supposed to be Q&A!

    Best wishes & thanks for your patience. : )

    Sven Dullah,

    It looks good! Coupled with the pearly environment lighting, the car is a showroom eyecandy.

    Cheers!

    Lense flare a nice touch and (for me at least) shows what hair, teeth, eyes, & clothing should look like when someone knows what they are doing.  ; )

    Title: Iolanthe in the Temple

    After looking at some of my first ever renders, made back  in 2015, I thought I would revisit and rework a few of them. I am not self-confident enough to show the original but this is much better!

    Beautiful!

    Very brave of you to go back to those days, I rarely want to look back at all the crap stuff I've been posting over the years...when I do, it always makes me feel uncomfortable haha.

    But it has been quite a journey so far, and hopefully it's far from over:-)

    Totally gorgeous render. My interest is mainly stylized/toon rendering, but I understand people whose hobby is to try to make things ultra-photorealistic. That's their hobby. To me, though, this render is more than "real enough" (to quote the Doug and the Slugs song). While 3D fanatics might sit down and find things that don't look "real", I firmly believe that the vast majority of people won't find any faults. If this image was in a magazine they were flipping through, they wouldn't stop and comment that it's not real.

    Very well done!

     I think its important to look back on occassion,  to see the progression and the development of the craft.  My Day in a Life thread was started in 2012, so hitting 12 years,  some of that old stuff would have been affected by the tools in those days  as much as the ability to put them to use, and yet,  I was younger and more creative than I am now.  We all grow.  Key is, try to learn something new everyday.

     Thank you. I'm in the good enough school of thought for creativity.  Sometimes you just want to be a photographer and place a couple spotlights and see what develops.  The most time was spent getting that hair under the hoodie.

    I will mentioned that this render is with DS4.10  I don't think I would try to render with 3DL with any of the versions after DS4.12

    Yes, I was curious too.  While most of my renders are done in DS4.8, this one was in the latest 4.22 beta:

    Thanks very much also for including all of the assets used, much appreciated. You never know what's going to catch someone's eye in a render like this.
