Content Management System falling over

Am I the only user who keeps having problems with the CMS? I have had to reload the database several times and currently can't search or see most of the files I know to exist. I have tried uninstall/reinstall without success (although there was something about a special uninstall in one of the forum entries - but no clue as to how). I also find that I can often not see (even when CMS works) many third party files.
Anyone have any solutions?
In simple terms please - I still have problems with the jargon.

Unless the third party files have Metadata (unlikely) then you wont see them anywhere but in the Content Library pane, which does not use CMS.

In windows, go to Start > All Programs > DAZ 3D > Content Management Service, make sure that DS is not running, and uninstall CMS from there. Then reinstall DS, and CMS will be replaced.

Using DIM, you should be able to install the new PostgreSQL database which is much more stable than the older Valentina one.

Thanks. That seems to have worked. I did, however, notice that the CMS is 32 rather than 64 and I have a 64 computer. Is there a 64-bit version? Could this be the problem?

The PostgreSQL CMS has a 64-bit version, although the 32-bit version will work on a 64-bit OS, but the 64-bit version will be much faster.

Thanks. How do I find it?

In the DIM, Ready to Download tab, click on the 'Download Filters' at the top of the interface.

Make sure that you have 'Windows 64 bit' checked. That should get it. You can also download it from your Product Library as well.

Back working now, thanks. I remain suspicious that it will keep falling over, though.
    Thanks all for the help,

Did you run the conversion program as well, to change your Valentina db over to PostgreSQL?

If so, you no longer need CMS as a running process, PostgreSQL doesn't use it, and it is much more stable than Valentina was.

If you use the non-beta version of Carrara 8.5 though, you can't use PostgreSQL with it, only the beta version.

See! Now you're trying to confuse me. What conversion program? All I did was install the PostgreSql which was hiding in my 'Ready to Install' bit.
Incidentally, when I tried to use the uninstaller I kept getting a message saying I need administrator rights. Given that I have them I was even more confused. I think I used windows eventually, but I am beginning to get very befuddled by everything.

I'm sorry if you are confused, that was not my intention.

In order to use the PostgreSQL db system, you need to populate the database files with the info already in the Valentina/CMS files. There is a program which should be available to you in DIM called 'PostgreSQL CMS From Valentina CMS Conversion'. You need to run that to do the conversion (inside DIM)

After that, you will be using PostgreSQL for all of the actions that were previously performed by CMS, and it is a lot more stable. You then no longer need CMS (unless you also use Carrara?)

    Dear JimmyC,
Thanks. I never thought you were trying to confuse me, so I apologise if you inferred that I thought so. The problem is that I am sitting at home with no access to others for help apart from this means. I used to work in an environment where I could toddle upstairs to It specialists, and find the loss of that facility is frustrating. I have more than 2000 items on the computer through DIM alone, so being someone who is not particularly process-driven I tend to use the seat of my pants (now isn't that interesting? we ought to say the seat of our trousers over here...) for learning. Matters are aggravated by the simple fact that the computer on which I run Daz is not the one I use for emails, although that is clearly not an issue using this system - apart from recalling how to find the thread....
I have the two programs you mention installed, but I haven't a clue whether the CMS is using them or not. I get a little green button saying 'Start CMS'' which sometimes makes a difference and sometimes doesn't. I'm hoping that installing the 64-bit version has stabilised it.

    Hello again Malcolm

I know all of this can be a bit confusing to say the least :)

Have a look at this help page, it may explain better than I can : http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/18869/start

Once you have PostgreSQL installed, you then run the conversion program, then you will be using PostgreSQL for everything that CMS did. When you run DAZ Studio, if you look in Task Manager, you will see several versions of 'postgres.exe' running as processes. When I run DS, I can usually see seven versions of it running, but they are very small processes. As soon as I exit from DS, all of the postgres.exe processes stop running, and are removed from Task Manager, so unlike CMS, they only run when they are being used by DAZ Studio.

Do you have your own Categories? By that I mean, have you created Categories yourself to make your content easier to find?

If so, you should use the 'Export User Data' option from the drop-down menu in the Content Library pane > DB Maintenance. Once you have PostgreSQL installed, and have run the conversion program, you can then 'Re-import Metadata' from the same menu, and all will be restored to the way it was.

Once I had all of that done, I removed CMS by uninstalling it, but I later had to put it back to be able to use Smart Content in Carrara 8.5 Beta. If you don't use Carrara, then you don't need CMS, so there should be no more problems with your database folders.

If you need any more help with this, please ask, that is what we are here for, best wishes.
