A momentous Occasion (for me) My first serious attempt at a render
At last a render.
I'm pretty happy with it, although the glow from one of the characters' nostrils is rather odd. Its not meant to be a great composition, just a simple scene in a garden that looks reasonably believable.
On the plus side the shadows seem to have worked pretty well. I have used 1 distant light as the sun, set for Ray Trace shadows, and Advanced Ambient Light to provide the scattered light. The render settings are 3Delight, pixel 12, shadow 24, shading rate 1, Gamma Correction ON, Gamma 2.2, pixel filter Sinc, width 6. Is the shading rate right?
I have read a lot about Gamma settings, so I ran a number of test renders with & without. I came to the conclusion that on is way better than off in this render. The general believability seemed to increase a lot, with greater depth of colour and generally better spread of light. It was necessary to revisit the lighting setting with Gamma on.
Have I made any errors? Is there anything that could have been markedly better done regarding light or render settings?
Thanks

Lighting is good! Shadow seems fine, would like to see it with a depth of field camera to make it look more realistic.
You say this is your first render?
you know more than me and I've been rendering for months!!
Nice work!
Thanks, what is depth of field? Not come across that yet.
I don't mean what is it, I understand DoF, but what is it within Daz? How do I change it in the render?
We did actually do a New Users Contest on DOF (Depth of field) These contests are designed to be fun and educational at the same time.
We have a WIP (Work In Progress) thread where the people taking part can show their preliminary renders and get advice. Consequently all these threads are saved so that they can be referred back to
There is a lot of information throughout the thread here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/37805/
Here we have a list of all the WIP threads and descriptions of what the challenges were about. It can be very useful for New Users.

Hello,
shows how much I don't know! Had no clue about there being a camera available with settings like a real camera, just been using the perspective view set up.
I see the camera has /f stops, that will be fun. How realistic are they? Do you run into diffraction distortion at extreme high f/stops?
Also, does it "have" autofocus so to speak, or is it necessary to adjust it manually?
:red: I don't actually use DS. Come and ask Questions in the New Users Help Forum, IT is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers who between them can answer almost any question on any program and OS and there are others who visit that forum regularly who will be able to help you with lots of things http://www.daz3d.com/forums/categories/97/
Thanks I will go there.
