n00b here! Genesis, Genesis2, Victoria, Poser, what?!
I have the basic download of the free program and when I'm searching for clothing, accessories, it says I need all sorts of things in order for them to work. Basically, I want to be able to position a figure, dress him or her, and change the skin color, markings, hair, etc. to make aliens for my sci-fi roleplay as examples of the species we'll be encountering. I know I have to buy things, but I just don't know where to start. :) Any help would be most welcome.

OK you have DS 4.7 on your computer?
Did you also download and install the Genesis Starter Essentials and the Genesis 2 Starter Essentials? Olus there are also some other downloads you will need to get started. The SubSUrface Shader base I believe is one of them
According to my Install Manager, I have installed:
Dagger Dancer
Dagger Dreams
DAZ Studio 4.7
Default Lights and Shaders for DAZ Studio
Genesis 2 - DMC
Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials
Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials PoserCF
Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials
Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials PoserCF
Morphing Rocks and Formations DS
Pond Builder - Base
PostgreSQL CMS
Scene Builder for DAZ Studio
Subsurface Shader Base
Weird. I see that I still have 5 things ready for download, but they were never downloaded:
Genesis Starter Essentials
Genesis Starter Essentials Poser CF
GoZ for DAZ Studio 4.7+
Install Manager Default Filters
Photoshop 3D Bridge for DAZ Studio 4.7+
Okay, so those are now installed. :)
Well you only need GoZ if you also have ZBrush and ditto with the Photoshop bridge, that needs Photoshop
The free DAZ Studio software comes with some very basic character models, props, skin models, etc. Unless your aliens look almost completely human with different colored skin (say, blue or green), you will have a hard time using the base materials to do anything sophisticated. It is, of course, possible to MAKE everything you want, for free, but IMO, this is not worth the time/effort unless you are really into 3D modeling. If you just want some renders to put onto NPC sheets for an RPG, you're better off finding an alien character model here on the DAZ Shop and buying it, just in terms of time/effort.
There are also morph packs you can buy, where you can do things like change the shape of the face, ears, etc to be very inhuman looking. Whether you want to use the Genesis or Genesis 2 models will determine which morph pack you want. For example, if you want to use Genesis 2, you could get something like this creature creator: http://www.daz3d.com/creature-creator-for-genesis-2-female-s (of course you would then also need a male variant unless all your aliens are girls). Packs like this come with sliders that work inside DAZ studio so no other editing is required. You can slide all the way to one species or another or you can mix-and match, half one alien half another, to get the look you want.
As you hunt through DAZ looking for the items you want, I will give you a couple of bits of advice:
1. When you buy an item, say the "Supersuit," check to see if there are texture packs that go with it. You may want some of those, though of course, that will add to the cost.
2. Check the "what's included" features to see what you are getting.
3. To save money, if you are not in a rush, put the items you want into your wish list and check back occasionally. Buy them when they are on sale... I just bought stuff on my wish list that is normally priced at around $20 each for $1.99 each due to a sale. Spent like $15 for over $100 worth of stuff. But again, you have to not be in a rush. If you need it today because you are having an RP session tonight, then this tactic won't help you.
If you take a quick look in the parameters for Genesis you will find Alien humanoid. this will make the face more alien, if you want a really alien looking alien you need to buy some morphs, Steven was right Creature creator has just about everything you need.
With creature creator you can make some ace monsters and stuff.
Like this Creeper from MineCraft I created using it.
Okay, so I installed the Creature Creator for Genesis and Genesis 2 (64 bit) and I'm able to turn the Genesis 2 guy's skin into scales, ect., but I don't see any other options. How do I give him different ears, face, etc? I am so new at this that my brain hurts, haha.
